Widely known as “The Gateway to the Cotswolds”, Burford is a wonderful shopping town and full of all those picture perfect spots the area is so well known for.

Burford is the home of the biggest tourist attraction in the Cotswolds, Cotswold Wildlife Park, as well as a wide range of interesting shops and great eateries.

Whether you're staying in Burford or merely passing through (it is the gateway after all), do make sure you take time for a walk up and down the High Street as there are wonderful little side streets to explore, old pubs, tea and antique shops aplenty. The 15th century parish church of St John Baptist is magnificent and another sign of bygone riches based on the wool trade.

Burford lies on the river Windrush and was the site of a fortified ford in Anglo-Saxon times. The town grew to be an important crossroads and very wealthy wool town and is, today, very popular with visitors.

The broad main street slopes gently down to the river and is lined with dignified old houses and ancient cottages, all of which appear little changed since Tudor times, as witnessed by the precarious angles at which the buildings have come to rest.
