About the location

WHITCHURCH, HEREFORDSHIRE

Symonds Yat 0.5 miles; Monmouth 4 miles; Ross-on-Wye 7 miles.

The village of Whitchurch lies between the small market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean. Boasting lovely walks in every direction, Whitchurch has a thriving village shop and coffee shop selling locally sourced products, a pub and a restaurant. Just a short distance away is Symonds Yat, a pretty Herefordshire village, which straddles the River Wye, home to the magnificent natural limestone rock popular with wildlife enthusiasts and climbers, as well as a Butterfly Farm and Maze. The Royal Forest of Dean, England's largest oak forest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, boasts many outdoor activities, including horseback riding, abseiling, caving, numerous cycle routes and a high wire rope course. Other activities on offer for the less energetic include fishing, golf and kayaking to name just a few. Close by is the pretty village of Goodrich with its 12th century Marcher Castle, village shop and two pubs both serving good food. The historic town of Monmouth is well worth a visit with its mixture of Georgian mansions and Victorian courtyards, while the riverside town of Ross-on-Wye has many timbered Tudor buildings, riverside walks and excellent shops, pubs and restaurants. Day trips can be enjoyed to the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park, the unspoilt Malvern Hills, Hereford and Hay-on-Wye.
