When you visit the Cotswolds to stay in a Cotswold holiday cottage, you have a unique opportunity you may never have had before. You can visit not one but two beautiful arboreta in this area.
An arboretum is a garden that is focused on trees. While there will be other plants and attractions in the garden, the main focus will be on providing a collection of trees that have grown over many decades. Young trees will also be planted to continue the theme into the future.
Batsford Arboretum is very close to Moreton-in-Marsh. It is spread over 56 acres and there are many paths through the grounds. You can visit the arboretum throughout the year; indeed it is wise to try and see it during each season because it changes so much. Acers, bamboo and oak are among the multitude of trees you can see here.
You’ve also got a wonderful opportunity to pick up some delights for your own garden. The arboretum has a garden shop and a plant centre. You can take home topiary, fruit trees, perennials and so much more as well. Make sure you find the time to visit the Garden Terrace Café for some refreshments too. You’ll need it after all the walking!

The other major arboretum in the Cotswolds is Westonbirt Arboretum. It’s not far from Tetbury and can be easily found from all directions. The arboretum is split into two main areas – the Silk Wood to the west and the Old Arboretum to the north-east. In between these two parts you will find the welcome building, the plant centre and various other facilities.
If you have booked into a Cotswold holiday cottage that is dog-friendly, you can take your pooch to Westonbirt as well. They are welcome in Silk Wood but you cannot take them into the arboretum section. However Silk Wood is a large area with plenty of paths and things to see and do.
With guided walks at certain times, the chance to have a snack and a drink in the café and a shop to browse round, Westonbirt Arboretum makes for the perfect day out in the Cotswolds.
