Property Information

Garden Cottage is a delightful holiday cottage located adjacent to the wonderful Shilbrook Manor, itself a listed building built around the 1860's. The property has undergone a complete overhaul and today provides a high standard of self catering accommodation whilst overlooking a simply stunning garden of two acres. The cottage is situated on the edge of the hamlet of Black Bourton, which has history dating back to 1086, and is within easy reach of popular spots such as Burford, Woodstock and Lechlade on Thames. This romantic hideaway is ideal for a couple who want to escape to the Cotswolds.

The owner, who is a garden designer, is also a keen horticulturalist very happy to sell plants (when and where possible!) in addition to eggs and home made preserves.

ACCOMMODATION (All on one level)

Outside
French doors lead to the private, raised terrace with garden furniture with BBQ. Beyond are the gardens and the 'Shill Brook' from where you can watch the cows gently grazing. The owner's keen interest in plants and topiary has created delightful landscaped gardens and a copse (available to guests). Of particular interest is the stunning display of snowdrops in Jan/Feb, the carpets of crocus in late Feb followed by a riot of colour of different narcissi from March to May - a real gardeners' delight!

Please No Pets. Please No Smokers. Central Heating and Electricity included all year. Wi-Fi. Off street parking within the cottage grounds. Any Day changeover except High Season, when Fridays are preferred.

Map & Local Information

Garden Cottage is situated on the edge of Black Bourton, a village near to Bampton and also the popular Burford. The village is small but with a long history: records date back to medieval times, with murals in the church as well as the infamous 'black' friars who lived next to Shilbrook Manor, home to Garden Cottage! The village has a local pub The Vines which is literally around the corner from the cottage and serves good, traditional 'grub'.

Beyond the village are a number of attractive villages many of which have good pubs worth visiting - The Plough in Clanfield and The Plough (!) in Alvescot to name two. Bampton is well worth a visit, as it has a host of sites of interest, including the West Oxfordshire Arts Gallery (the owner displays her 'Bird in the Hand' products!) plus 3 large manor houses including the former rectory which was used in the filming of Downton Abbey and The Suspicions of Mr Wickham. Bampton is also the 'spritual' home of Morris Dancing!

Burford is approx 8 miles away and beyond are many of the Cotswolds' hotspots making this an excellent choice for touring the region. Oxford is approx 20 mins drive away, providing a great day out for all.
With riding stables 3 miles and golf 5 miles away this is a great spot for relaxation or to tour the Cotswolds, Oxford (20 miles), Cheltenham or Stratford for an easy day out.
