“A Great Week in the Black Mountains.”
I spent a wonderful week at White Haywood Farmhouse from 12th-19th December, and it exceeded expectations. As a solo traveller, I was initially concerned the property might feel too large, but it was perfect, cosy, characterful, and exactly what I needed for a peaceful escape.

I spent a wonderful week at White Haywood Farmhouse from 12th-19th December, and it exceeded expectations. As a solo traveller, I was initially concerned the property might feel too large, but it was perfect, cosy, characterful, and exactly what I needed for a peaceful escape.
The farmhouse itself is stunning. The 16th-century beams and original features create warmth and character, and the woodburning stove was my evening companion after long days exploring. The kitchen had everything I needed to cook my meals, which I enjoyed at the breakfast bar while gazing out at the mountain views. The farm was extremely clean and everything worked perfectly, from the heating to the WiFi.
The hot tub was a real plus there's something magical about soaking under the December stars with the Black Hill silhouetted against the winter sky. Pure bliss after a day's walking.
Location-wise, it's pretty good. I made day trips to both Hay-on-Wye (charming bookshops, perfect for a rainy afternoon) and Abergavenny (fantastic market and cafes), both easily accessible. The real adventure was tackling Pen-y-Fan, it's a drive to get there but a rewarding hike. The December weather was crisp and clear, and the views were breathtaking. I found the village shop at Longtown a real boon for local snacks, and the Bull's Head in Craswall, on the same road as the Farm, has an amazing restaurant and an amazing cider called Gasping Goose.
Having direct access to the Cat's Back from the back door was handy. I did a couple of walks straight from the property without needing to drive anywhere.
I can definitely recommend White Haywood Farmhouse as a peaceful, characterful base to explore this stunning part of the country.
