“A Great Week in the Black Mountains.”

I spent a wonderful week at White Haywood Farmhouse from 12th-19th December, and it exceeded expectations. I spent a wonderful week at White Haywood Farmhouse from 12th-19th December, and it exceeded expectations. As a solo traveller, I was initially concerned the property might feel too large, but it was perfect, cosy, characterful, and exactly what I needed for a peaceful escape. The farmhouse itself is stunning. The 16th-century beams and original features create warmth and character, and the woodburning stove was my evening companion after long days exploring. The kitchen had everything I needed to cook my meals, which I enjoyed at the breakfast bar while gazing out at the mountain views. The farm was extremely clean and everything worked perfectly, from the heating to the WiFi. The hot tub was a real plus there's something magical about soaking under the December stars with the Black Hill silhouetted against the winter sky. Pure bliss after a day's walking. Location-wise, it's pretty good. I made day trips to both Hay-on-Wye (charming bookshops, perfect for a rainy afternoon) and Abergavenny (fantastic market and cafes), both easily accessible. The real adventure was tackling Pen-y-Fan, it's a drive to get there but a rewarding hike. The December weather was crisp and clear, and the views were breathtaking. I found the village shop at Longtown a real boon for local snacks, and the Bull's Head in Craswall, on the same road as the Farm, has an amazing restaurant and an amazing cider called Gasping Goose. Having direct access to the Cat's Back from the back door was handy. I did a couple of walks straight from the property without needing to drive anywhere. I can definitely recommend White Haywood Farmhouse as a peaceful, characterful base to explore this stunning part of the country.

About the location

CRASWALL

Hay on Wye 9 miles, Hereford 17.7 miles; Brecon 22.9 miles

Craswall lies on the fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park, bordering Wales in the foothills of the Black Mountains. This quiet village offers the ideal location for exploring all that Herefordshire has to offer. Nearby, is the historical landmark 'Arthur's Stone', a Neolithic burial chamber set in the hills above the Golden Valley. This tomb is over 5,000 years old with links to King Arthur since pre-13th century, with a gruesome legend behind it. Hay-on-Wye is renowned for its world-famous Hay Festival of Literature, a popular destination for book-lovers, housing many book shops, antique shops, cafes and restaurants. Attractions nearby include The Three Castles Walk, Eastnor Castle, the Offa's Dyke Path, and the Mortimer Trail. Let us not forget the historic city of Hereford, with its medieval bridge over the River Wye, offering an eclectic mix of architecture from almost every British era. This town is famous for producing cider and is also home to the Mappa Mundi, which is located in the magnificent cathedral alongside the famous Chained Library, a collection of over 1500 rare books. This 17th-century library is the largest to survive with all of its chains, rods and locks still in tact, a fascinating treasure in Britain's history. Discover the delights of the neighbouring regions of Shropshire, Worcestershire and The Cotswolds. There is plenty to see and do in the wider area, making this the perfect base for your next holiday in England.
