“A lovely little cottage that feels both cosy and surprisingly spacious.”

Everything was spotlessly clean, tidy and well presented, making it a very comfortable and relaxing place to stay. The cottage has a warm, welcoming feel and provides everything you need for an enjoyable break. There are also plenty of interesting places to visit in the surrounding area, with lots of attractions, walks and lovely towns and villages all within easy reach. It’s a great location for exploring the area while still having a peaceful and comfortable cottage to return to at the end ...

Everything was spotlessly clean, tidy and well presented, making it a very comfortable and relaxing place to stay. “We had two issues with out cottage Firstly, it did not have a Woodburner as in the original description and on-line photographs.”

It was in fact a gas burner which had been disconnected for safety reasons. This was a huge disappointment as we had booked to stay for a week over Christmas. Secondly, the oven did not work properly. It was not getting up to temperature very quickly so it took forever to cook anything and then it could not maintain a temperature of 200 resulting in an insipid looking Turkey, which took much longer than it should to cook. The owner helped out by giving us access to another oven but it meant we had to go outside and around the back of the property with all of our baked food for a full Christmas lunch. Furthermore, the Oven had previously had problems for another guest three months before so it seems the owner ignored their feedback and the oven was not fixed. We did not have a working oven all week apart from help with Christmas day. All this and we are still waiting for any compensation given that Sykes cottages website does not recognise our booking reference and we are waiting for them to contact us.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are genuinely sorry to hear that aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, particularly over the Christmas period. We are sorry that you felt misled by the images on our website. While the property description did state that the cottage had no log burner and instead featured a gas fire, we fully appreciate that the photographs may have caused confusion. To prevent this for future guests, we have now updated the listing to clearly state that the gas fire is decorative only. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We also appreciate that you experienced unforeseen issues with the oven. Unfortunately, the appliance did prove to be temperamental during your stay. We understand that this was not ideal and acted quickly to assist by providing access to an alternative oven on Christmas Day. The oven has since been completely replaced, and no further problems are expected. We were genuinely pleased that these issues did not prevent you from extending your stay by an additional night and hope this means you still enjoyed aspects of your holiday despite the difficulties. November wouldn’t ordinarily be ideal for a stay, but it didn’t matter because it is so peaceful, cosy and welcoming. There are many places to visit within a short distance so there is plenty to do if you can tear yourself away from the cottage. We can’t wait to come back, maybe in the warmer months, but any time would be lovely.

“We loved Keepers cottage, it had everything for a comfortable stay.”

It is very secluded and quiet, both bedrooms with en-suite and very good showers. The area around is worth exploring, there’s is byson and elk farm a short walk away, where you can see owls, a donkey, pony and Guinea fowls. Several national trusts nearby, Compton Abbas airfield where you can watch planes take coming in and out. We visited Bath, Castle Combe village in Cotswolds, Messums barn/gallery in Tisbury, and Bournemouth which are all within 1 hour drive away. We were in the middle of the heatwave but cottage stayed cool. Amanda was a great host and nice to talk to. Milk and cake on arrival were much appreciated!

The cleanliness, facilities and views of countryside were lovely. We saw deer in the field outside our lounge along with chickens. On our second evening we watched an aircraft fireworks display which was fantastic. Our only negative was the extra firm mattress in the larger bedroom which we found too hard. However this could be our personal opinion We would definitely stay here again if we visit Wiltshire in the future

The facilities are excellent and it is spotlessly clean. It is in an area we had not visited before and there are lots of enjoyable walks nearby. There are no pubs within walking distance for an evening meal so we cooked for ourselves using the well equipped kitchen. There are places to eat out a short drive away. I would highly recommend it if you want a base for a walking/cycling holiday.

“We were very well looked after by the owners.”

At the time we were due to take the property there were exceptional gales so we booked a day earlier direct with the owners so we could avoid travelling in the worst of the storm. Over that first weekend we experienced a 36 hour electricity failure affecting the whole area and the owners did all they could to support us with heat and food and candles for lighting. Over the week the weather could have been a lot better but the property could not be faulted and its owners went well beyond the call of duty to make us comfortable.

Amanda made us very welcome on the day we arrived, and when the whole area experienced a power cut during the week, she offered to boil a kettle for us, so that we could make a hot drink. Fortunately the power came back on in time to cook dinner! A couple of days before our arrival she sent a list of local pubs and restaurants in case we wanted to book ahead, according to Covid regulations. An added bonus was the table tennis table in the barn, my husband and daughter thoroughly enjoyed playing a couple of games. Keepers Cottage is conveniently situated in close proximity to many places of interest, although because of the Covid situation it is best to book ahead if you wish to visit. Hopefully, we will be able to visit again some time in the future.

The owners of the cottage were extremely helpful and on hand for any enquiries but were not intrusive. WEST KNOYLE

Mere 3 miles; Gillingham 4 miles; Shaftesbury 7 miles.

The two rural communities of East and West Knoyle, the former being the birthplace of Sir Christopher Wren, sit on the Wiltshire side of the Dorset border and are also close to the border with Somerset. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on the edge of the Blackmore Vale, the gentle rolling West Wiltshire downland is dotted with picturesque villages and lovely walks, with the impressive house and gardens at Stourhead just a short drive away. Close by, there are opportunities for sailing available at Shear Water, which borders the Longleat Estate, well-known for its Safari Park and stunning stately home. There are numerous places of interest worth visiting nearby, including mystical Stonehenge, the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury and the impressive city of Bath. This is a delightful rural base from which to explore this fascinating area.
