The Folly at Castlebridge

If you need to get away from the hustles of life for a while you couldn't do any better than spend some time at Castlebridge Folly.

You enter a clean bright comfortable kitchen, With stairs leading a tastefully decorated living area, a spiral staircase then takes you to a mezzanine bedroom with a large cosy bed. The atmosphere of the folly and surrounding grounds Is calm and peaceful. It's a little piece of heaven, and it makes a wonderful unique holiday retreat. We enjoyed The complementary homemade Jam and marmalade The owners their extremely friendly and leave you in peace to get on with it. I can recommend this to anyone who likes a tranquil and restful holiday.

The Folly is an exceptional property in exceptional grounds in a lovely area.

It is very clean , and very well maintained . The owner is kind and thoughtful. Dogs are allowed and our dog really enjoyed being there. This part of Wiltshire is beautiful and unspoilt - we particularly loved Stourhead National Trust property which is really close by

We were really privileged to stay at the lovely Folly.

The owner Colin and Clare were really hospitable. The Folly had an amazing atmosphere and tastefully appointed. Fresh flowers, delicious homemade marmalade and jam. The inclement weather made our stay even more comfortable. A cosy log fire and a weekend watching Nations Rugby topped with a tipple or two. Spring had sprung, lovely gardens with snow drops, primroses abound. We'd love to come back again. Thank you.

We really enjoyed our week at The Folly.

Very quiet, private and secluded yet very close to main route. We'll located for Stourhead which is nearby. Local village of Mere 5 mins away with good local amenities. Approx. 10 mins drive to a Waitrose too! The Folly is very warm, cosy and comfortable. Owner very helpful and friendly, without being intrusive. Everything you could possibly need has been provided in the property. The Folly was immaculately presented and very clean, with beautiful grounds. We would definitely stay again in the future. Lovely place to stay even if you don't go out anywhere.

The Folly was all we expected: quirky, romantic, beautiful!

The hosts are very kind, Colin gave us good recommendations for walks and pubs. We hope to come back some time.

This was my second visit to The Folly and it was as good as my first.

The property is very comfortable and exceptionally clean. The owners have provided all the small things that make life easier - a good supply of logs for the wood burner, dishwasher/ washing machine tablets, bin bags to name a few. The surrounding grounds are well maintained and there is plenty of space to sit and appreciate the tranquillity. I didn’t use the bbq but it’s a thoughtful addition for the summer evenings. There are a couple of chairs and a small table which were great if you wanted to sit outside for morning coffee/lunch. I took one of the chairs up the external staircase so that I could enjoy the afternoon sunshine. The owners are so welcoming and made sure that I had everything I needed. They are also a good source of information about the local area if you wish to sample the local hostelries and/ or gardens. This really is an exceptional place to stay.

This is probably the best holiday let we have stayed in, with friendly hosts and accommodation presented to a very high standard and in a beautiful setting.

Even more special was the large garden and pond. Thoughtful details which set the let apart from others include the proper sized (large) bath towels, a wide selection of cooking ingredients and place to put coats and shoes. The rooms felt a good size, despite the small size of the building, and were well furnished and comfortable, including the small mezzanine bedroom with what felt like a king sized bed.

The warm and friendly welcome, set us up for a very peaceful and relaxing stay. The Folly is in a great position above the waterfall. It is lovely to sit outside in an evening, either on the balcony or on the patio by the pond. There is lots to see in the local rea too. We hope to be back!

Perfect heaven, just like a doll’s house.

Every detail has been thought through. Everything you could need is provided. Wonderfully private and serene. Stunning views, and a peaceful garden to relax in. Kind and generous hosts with interesting stories to tell. Couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay.

Helpful and welcoming couple, with a beautiful folly set in a gorgeous location.

If you like hiking then this is the perfect spot as there are loads of hikes near by, especially around king Alfred's tower and Stourhead Gardens.

The owners have thought of everything to make it a relaxing and comfortable place to stay. The gardens are beautiful and the perfect place to sit & relax. The property is in the perfect location with lots of places to visit close by. Hopefully we will be able to stay at The Folly again soon.

The Folly is an incredible property.

Locations is pure paradise. Absolutely every detail has been thought of both in and outside the property from kitchen equipment, herbs, spices, sauces, to umbrellas, torches and everything in between. The gardens are beautiful, we spent most evenings sat outside enjoying different areas, the pond in particular was delightful, one of if not the best pond I've seen. Upon arrival the property was absolutely spotlessly clean. Super comfortable bed and I will miss that shower! Colin was a wonderful host, only a text away if needed and full of local knowledge for walks and places to visit. I cannot recommend the Folly highly enough, there are not enough stars to do it justice. We don't normally return to the same holiday cottages as like to try new places all the time however this is one place we will definitely book again and again.

We can only describe the folly as Enchanting.

Our stay was perfect , all you could need was there , the kitchen was fully equipped even down to Tea bags and Ketchup. The grounds were beautiful and really added to the overall enjoyment of our trip. We try to find somewhere different when we go away , the folly will take some beating. Colin and Clare were very welcoming and fonts of local knowledge, Take our advice and book a visit.

Inside, everything is spotless and tasteful. The bedroom and bathroom area is inevitably exiguous but the folly has been imaginatively adapted. Colin and Clare are very welcoming.

Very special place, a totally unique haven .

The folly itself is enchanting,full of character and charm.The owners have gone to great lengths to ensure the folly has been creatively refurbished and fully equipped with everything needed.This extends to the provision of delicious home made jam&marmalade; and condiments.The folly is totally detached,set on a hill with 360 degree panoramic views of the beautiful countryside.If you can raise yourself from the nest-like bed, you will be treated to the spectacular sunrise/sunset.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Folly.

Hosts were very attentive and welcoming. Great location for us as we explored the surrounding areas, Longleat, Bath, Cheddar. Would definitely go back perhaps in the summer months when we can enjoy the outdoor space more. huge thank you to Colin and Claire for looking after us.

Our stay at the Folly was wonderful.

Colin and Clarice were great and responsive hosts. The Folly served as a warm, comforting ‘home’ to return to after a day of rambling over the Wiltshire countryside. Also, the grounds were lovely and beautifully kept. And you can hear the Matins bells of St. Michael’s ring changes!

A very special little hideaway in a beautiful part of the country.

The setting was gorgeous-lovely, well kept gardens & extensive pond & waterfall on the slope below the property where we could sit & relax. The hosts made us very welcome. We loved the spiral ironwork staircase up to the mezzanine level where the bedroom was!

A lovely cottage in the garden of the large house, itself in acres of countryside, but still within easy reach of several towns and villages.

Everything we needed was at hand and fittings were to a high standard. The owners are delightful and very helpful. The only thing people should be aware of is that the property is on three floors, with the kitchen down stairs,living room in the middle and the bedroom and bathroom on the top floor. Some one with mobility problems might have difficulty. All I can say is that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The Folly is so unusual, it’s a special place.

We had a great time. It’s on 3 floors. The ground floor is a well equipped kitchen. The second floor is a nice lounge, with a log burning stove. The bedroom is a mezzanine above. The shower room off it is small but adequate. The bedroom is also small but with a decent sized comfortable bed. The building seems to retain its heat and was snug. The spiral staircase is a little tricky to negotiate, particularly with a case. The TV has Freeview stations, but nothing more. Colin the owner was so helpful & pleasant, and Clare’s jam and marmalade were delicious.

Colin could not have been more welcoming or helpful, and Care's home made marmalade was as good as we hoped. A perfect romatic hideaway for two. The kitchen was particularly well appointed, which is not always the case, and was a real bonus as I like to ciik.

This is our second stay there and we would be happy to stay again and again! The place feels very peaceful and tranquil. This is a true delight in any time of the year and any weather!

A beautiful, secluded place to stay in a great location.

Welcoming hosts who provided everything we needed for a perfect stay. 6 minutes drive to Stourhead House and Gardens, worth a visit! 20 minutes drive to Shaftesbury, beautiful place, the views from Gold Hill are amazing! The log burner in the Folly made the evenings warm and cosy after our day out walking. The bed was very comfortable and cleanliness was 100%. Perfect!

I am so grateful for a beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean little home for the week.

I was made very welcome, but also allowed my space. The only problem: I needed much longer to make the most of the magical garden and the tranquillity of the setting. No matter - will just have to return!

This was one of the best holidays homes we have stayed at.

Very quirky layout which made the absolute best of the beautiful surroundings. (Do mind your head I only made the mistake once C you said on arrival - it would only be the once )! The owners are close by and very approachable without being overbearing, they have a wealth of local knowledge and are happy to assist in any way they can. The homemade preserves have been mentioned in many reviews but they were marvelous. We loved this place and truly do hope to return. We enjoyed fabulous country walks and in Mere the facilities are great (co-op, grocer, pubs). We can highly recommend the Butt Of Sherry for good value, well prepared food and the chap front of house is such an asset he made us so very welcome - no need to drive anywhere if you don't want to just a 10 min walk across the Monarchs Way. The property is lovely and as described the only thing that is missing is a description of the access to the building from the parking space which for some could be very difficult.

We had a good stay and the proprietors were very friendly and helpful.

You thought of everything - a well-appointed, beautifully presented, stylish and comfortable home-from-home for a few days, in an atmospheric and imaginatively designed garden and large property.

Obviously a shame about the hum from the Mere By-pass whenever one steps outside (maybe this should be mentioned in the information) - but for a November break, ideal. Really appreciated the home-made jams and generous provision of supplies to keep one going (for days, if need be!). I'd certainly come again.

Lovely property in beautiful surroundings, this really is an ideal retreat to relax and unwind.

Quiet and secluded, theres a nice well kept garden for the dog to run about in and a lovely pond to sit by and relax, with plenty of wildlife. Split over 3 levels, a well equipped kitchen/diner downstairs, living area in the middle and a mezzanine bedroom/ensuite accessed from a spiral staircase. There's everything you could need make your stay enjoyable, the only thing if I could pick fault and it's being really picky is the lack of a sofa, would have been lovely to curl up on a sofa in front of the log burner. (The logistics of getting a sofa into the property are not lost on me, would have been a nice to have that's all) The armchairs provided are really comfy though, just not much good for cuddling up with the other half.

This is a magical place - quirky, peaceful, comfortable and spotlessly clean and well equipped.

Ideally situated for walking and some local tourist attractions. I visited Stourhead, King Alfred's Tower and Wardour Castle.

Huge thanks to Colin and his wife for a delightful stay at The Folly; it was a wonderful few days away centrally located in idyllic surroundings, perfect for exploring.

The place was immaculate and very clean and they were great hosts making us feel very welcome and at home. Only thing we missed was curling up on the sofa, a few usb points and TV apps such as Netflix. The gardens looked amazing even this time of year and it was very well maintained throughout. Such an incredible place to stay for a perfect getaway complete with log fires, nice country walks just on the doorstep and shops and pubs within walking distance.

The folly was beautiful and maintained to a very high standard. Our hosts were so very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Our home made preserves were beautiful and my purple geranium cutting that was kindly given is flourishing. A memory of my stay in this beautiful folly in outstanding countryside in my garden forever. I cannot recommend this place enough and hope to book again in the future.

Fantastic location and accommodation and I would recommend it to anyone, and you do get your exercise steps in going from car to Folly and up and down the stairs its not for the unfit.

As I have already said lovey in every aspect we sat out on patio every morning having breakfast watching the squirrels and birds in the trees, and at night sitting next to pond having a beer after a hard day sight seeing watching the stars brilliant. The owners left lovely welcome pack tea-coffee bread bacon and lovely home made jams all very nice. We loved are stay at the Folly the only problem we had was we stayed in July 2021 when temperatures where +29 degrees most days and the bed room gets very hot it has no windows and as a mezzanine floor in the apex of the roof heat rises so very warm at night we had two fans running every night "sorry if Colin's electric bill is higher than normal" There is one other thing that would have been nice in that the folly is ideal for romantic holiday it is lovely but in the lounge there are only two single seats we felt a nice sofa you can cuddle in on and watch a little TV at night would have been nice. I have no negatives about the folly we loved our holiday if you want a quiet stay in fantastic location with great accommodation you should try the Folly. regards Mike

The most stunning setting, georgeous place and beyond welcoming Hosts.

Everything you need is there, it's spotlessly clean and a truely very place to stay..a gem.

The Folly is beautiful and extremely well equipped.

We loved the garden and were lucky enough to have glorious weather so we were able to sit by the pond almost every day to relax and watch the bees. We walked across the fields several times to visit Mere - a lovely little village with a beautiful church. We definitely recommend The Butt of Sherry for a fantastic Sunday lunch - the staff were so welcoming and friendly and the food was excellent. We also visited The Walnut Tree - a little further on but accessible via a public footpath opposite The George Inn. Another lovely lunch. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. We visited Stourhead - twice as it was so beautiful. It is literally a 7 minute drive but you can spend a whole day enjoying the beautiful gardens, and having lunch at The Spread Eagle. We visited Monacute House, which is another lovely National Trust site with lovely walks, and a few nice pubs for lunch. Colin and Claire are wonderful hosts, very friendly and helpful with lots of local knowledge - the homemade jam and marmalade were delicious! This week has been an oasis of calm during a very difficult year - we have had a wonderful time and are going home with recharged batteries and fond memories.

The tastefully furnished Folly is situated in a slightly elevated position approached by an illuminated meandering path from the parking area within a charming tranquil private Estate surrounded by beautiful gardens, abundance of wildlife and countryside, a short walk from the village of Mere where we also enjoyed several hearty meals at the George Inn.

Watching the deer and pheasants especially during breakfast was a real treat and hunted for the allusive hedgehog. A Welcome Pack stocked with local produce and beautiful home made marmalade and raspberry jam by Clare was a surprise. The level of cleanliness was extremely high. The antique style metal winding staircase may be slightly challenging for some people. We found both Colin and Clare to be very proud, warm and endearing owners making our stay very special. Our Yorkie, Poppy also enjoyed the freedom of the Estate. There are may exciting places on the doorstep and enjoyed visiting Mere's own Castle Walk, Heavens Gate at Longleat, Stonehenge, Salisbury with its Cathedral, The Bratton White Horse at Westbury, The Caen Hill Locks at Devizes, Bath, Glastonbury (The Tor) and for those who like to venture further afield, Poole and Sandbanks with their lovely waterfront bars, cafes and restaurants and white sandy beach.

Fabulous cottage.

Extremely helpful owners. The cottage was spotless and current covid rules were all adhered to. The cottage was comfortable and had everything you could need for a week of relaxation. Definitely would go again.

The owners went to extreme lengths with cleaning because of Covid. The owners were friendly and helpful. The gardens are delightful and the whole ambience is exceptional.

Very clean, good hygiene and social distancing measures in place, so not at all worried about staying during the current pandemic.

Lots of extra touches, eg fresh flowers on all three floors and home made jam in the generous welcome pack. Very comfortable, quiet and restful stay.

We were thrilled with The Folly!

A beautiful building and equipped to the highest degree. Colin& Clare were excellent hosts, always at hand to answer any questions and such lovely people. The grounds were super and we spend several sessions just relaxing by the waterfall and watching the gold fish swim amongst the water lilies. The weather wasn't wonderfully kind, but with such a lovely base we were happy just to put our feet up.

The owners, Colin and Clare are a delightful couple and very focussed on ensuring their visitors are happy.

My husband and I stayed here for a short break.

The Folly was easy to find, following the instructions given. Clare and Colin were very welcoming, they kindly supplied us with some provisions such as bacon, eggs, milk, bread, butter, fresh fruit and some delicious homemade jam. The grounds the Folly are set in are beautiful (as is the main house gardens). It is a stunning building, with patio seating supplied to sit and admire the garden. The kitchen has everything you need. The lounge has some very comfortable seating, a log burner, writing desk and some lovely art work. Here there are three windows that look over the garden and beyond to the fields and Mere in the distance. There is a spiral staircase that takes you up to the bedroom and bathroom, both tastefully decorated. The bed is very comfortable, but we found the bathroom a tad on the narrow side, the shower is good to. We had a lovely stay here. It was so peaceful, to sit and read and listen to the sheep, birds and the sound of the wind in the trees. Would highly recommend The Folly.

We booked this place very last minute for a 3 night stay as a short honeymoon.

We wanted somewhere very quiet and relaxing to unwind after the stresses of organising our wedding. Well this place was everything we could have hoped for. Set far back from the road, surrounded by rolling hills and a beautiful pond with a waterfall. The manager had left us some champagne and smoked salmon on arrival and the fridge was stocked with breakfast items for the next day including the most wonderful homemade jams and marmalade. I liked the marrow and ginger jam so much I asked to have another jar to take home with me. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything we could need and the information packs are really useful. To be honest we needn't have brought anything but clothes with us because everything you need is there at the folly. If you need any food there is a short drive to mere where there's a co-op and pubs, restaurants, cafés and takeaways.

The Folly is a fantastic place for a peaceful escape from everything.

It is set in a beautiful peaceful location but close to many fantastic places to visit such as Stourhead which is only a short drive away and Stonehenge just over 30 minutes away. The Folly has everything you need, but if there is anything extra required the wonderful hosts are close at hand.

Charming and delightful; the folly, the garden, the pond, 'mein hosts', Mr and Mrs Liddell and their splendid dogs, and the surrounding area - excellent on all counts.

The Folly is a lovely small getaway in beautiful countryside.

Everywhere looked great with autumn colours doing their best. Very comfortable accommodation, with excellent welcome pack and well equipped cottage. Lots of dry wood supplied for the log burner. Good choice of books to browse through. Lots of places to visit nearby, including Stourhead and Bath, but lovely to come back to our temporary "home" to relax in the evenings. We would stay here again at any opportunity whatever the weather!

Beautifully and stylishly furnished with generous welcome goodies and toiletries. On a cold wet day it was warm and welcoming, a perfect get away location.\ No need to rush around, as the sun came out, walking in the grounds, kicking up the autumn leaves and finding shiny new conkers bursting from their spiny cases was delightful. A bottle or two from Yapps winery in Mere was an additional bonus. We can recommend eating at the Bell and Crown in Zeals. We will definitely return to this secret, exclusive hideaway.

It is set in beautiful peaceful garden setting ideal for a relaxing holiday. We are extremely particular about our holiday accommodation and the cottage was exactly what we were looking for with everything you need and supermarkets close by. Stourhead House and Gardens are well worth a visit as is Shaftesbury and Salisbury Cathedral. Hoping to return again to The Folly.

A place to get away from it all. Clare and Colin the owners are so welcoming , warm and friendly. Lots of great walks and lovely pubs that welcome dogs. We really enjoyed our stay at Castlebridge Folly. The Folly has been restored to the highest specification, it's warm and cosy. Would love to return in summer to take advantage of its beautiful garden and pond. Plenty of places to sit out and take in the landscape and soak up the sun's rays. Perfect for relaxation.

Ideally located for exploring Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset. Kind, thoughtful and generous hospitality coupled with a thorough knowledge of the area made our stay even better!

We found The Folly very comfortable and well equipped and with the best welcome pack we've ever had.

The owner,who lives nearby, is very friendly and helpful but not intrusive and has gone to a lot of trouble to make The Folly the perfect place to stay. It is ideally located for visiting nearby places of interest such as Bath, Wells, Glastonbury and the many stately homes in the area. Highly recommended.

The Folly was everything which we could have wished for and more.

Sad to be leaving today as I could spend an infinite amount of time here. The Folly is beautiful, such attention to detail. The welcome was lovely from the people and the dogs! Our dog will not be happy once back in London. Thank you so much for the perfect retreat. We'll be back.

This place is a total home from home.

We felt very privileged to stay here for a week over Christmas. The owners went out of their way to welcome us and to give us any help that we needed. It is unique, beautifully decorated, is very well stocked, and totally peaceful. If you are lucky enough to find this Folly available, I'd recommend you to grab it with both hands!!

We stayed at the Folly for a week - I only wish it could have been longer!

A great deal of time and effort has gone into the accommodation, which is first class. The surroundings were beautiful - I only wish my gardens were as well kept. Nothing was too much for the owners, who were always on hand to offer advice on restaurants and places to visit. We will definitely be back.
