Previously an old stable barn, this property has been refurbished to an excellent quality of finish with luxury fixtures and appliances, yet still keeping some of its former traditional aspects.

The open-plan living area is tastefully decorated with dining for two and a large, spacious kitchen for you to prepare your meals with ease.
The sitting area has high ceilings, exposed stone walls, stylish cream leather sofas and an electric fire keeping you nice and snug.
At the end is a large king-size bedroom with a characterful, feature chimney converted into hanging space.
The cottage is finished off beautifully with oak wood flooring throughout.
The garden has a bridleway leading to the Mortimer Forest trail, a well-known walking area and a lovely scenic route to take.
Orleton Common is a delightful little village, surrounded by bountiful countryside near the market town of Ludlow.
The town provides a fascinating range of architecture including Ludlow Castle which is open all year round and well worth a visit.
It is also within easy reach of popular attractions such as World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge, Severn Valley Railway, Berrington Hall, Croft Castle and Cardingmill Valley.

The conversion was beautiful if a little off the beaten track, good for walkers We had some problems with the water, it spluttered a lot and stopped completely on two occasions, Mary was very helpful and tried her best to alleviate the problem.

Close to Ludlow, Leominster and Welsh border, also NT Berrington Hall & Croft Castle. Welcome pack of goodies gratefully received. Cottage well-equipped and spotlessly clean with everything you could need for a home from home holiday. Deer running down the lane an added bonus. Would highly recommend to couples seeking a peaceful holiday but within easy access to towns and attractions.

A great week at a comfortable and well-equipped property within a supremely quiet and peaceful rural setting.
This is a great base for exploring: nearby Ludlow and Leominster are obvious candidates but Hereford isn’t too far and the Black and White Village trail (starting from Leominster) are great options. This is fine walking country too: literally on the doorstep is the Mortimer Trail but further afield is Church Stretton and the magnificent Cardingmill Valley. For lovers of stately homes, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle are but two options within easy reach yet gems such as Clun and St Bartholemew’s church at Richard’s Castle should be on your radar too. Our top attraction though was Stokesay Castle. Lovers of historic buildings will love this wonderfully unspoiled fortified medieval manor house. Woodpecker Cottage is well equipped and there is plenty of kit in the kitchen and a BBQ outside but just a mile down the road is the Maidenhead – we loved the food and were impressed that the draught cider was produced locally. The rural location means you would be unlucky not to spot deer strolling down the path, or woodpeckers in the trees but we also noted dragon flies, robins and a sparrow hawk. Excellent welcome pack (bread, milk, biscuits and a bottle of wine) provided by very helpful and friendly owners.
This was my second visit to Woodpecker Cottage and fortunately I was joined with my Granddaughter.
We both enjoyed the peace and quiet and the Cottage is perfect. Very well maintained and homely. There are plenty of places to visit nearby but it is equally nice to relax in the cottage with a book or wait for the deer and badgers to visit. Thank you for the lovely welcome pack Mary and your kind hospitality. We will definitely return again.

We loved the accommodation.
It was perfect size wise and being on one level was just right. The decor was tasteful and modern and the location was really quiet. We thought we’d missed the deer but was pleased to catch sight on our last night. We met the owner a couple of times and she was very friendly and helpful.
The accommodation worked very well for us in terms of comfort and location.

This was our second visit to Woodpecker Cottage which must surely be one of the most tranquil and restful locations in the country.
The word ‘perfect’ is almost inadequate because in today’s extremely challenging social climate this beautifully sited cottage, surrounded by magnificent forest offers peaceful calm and quietness - seemingly distant from the rigours of modern life but also offering excellent easy walking and the benefit of being within close enough proximity to two outstanding pub/restaurants. The charming hosts are at hand if needed - in essence Woodpecker Cottage offers everything you need for a truly relaxing holiday - an oasis of peace in the heart of beautiful woodland. Yes, ‘perfect’ is the word, perfect.

The facilities are all you could wish for and the owners are very warm and friendly making it a special holiday. The villagers in Orleton are all so welcoming and so happy to engage in conversation with you. I will certainly return again

The cottage was clean although a bit tired but did not stop us having a great comfortable stay.
The location was perfect quiet walks from the door with regular dusk visits of deer passing thro There were two pubs within a 30 minute stroll down quiet back lanes serving food we rarely used the car as numerous walks with maps available lovely couple Mary and John the owners just minutes away beautiful part of the country and a much appreciated welcome pack milk bread and cake what more could you ask
High standard barn conversion all on one level.
Out of the way up a track past owners house but fencing gives privacy. Generous welcome pack. Herd of deer regularly passing by through the garden and out down the lane.

Tucked away in a copse of trees, it is extremely quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the birdsong and wild flowers among the many hedgerows that line the lanes. Plenty of beautiful walks from the doorstep. The cottage was well equipped, clean and comfortable.
Our stay at Woodpecker cottage was most enjoyable.
The little touches such as milk, bread, cake and wine were lovely. Each room & space was big enough for the two of us. Shower was excellent...nice and hot & powerful. Bed nice and comfortable. Heating came on at random times....this may need adjusting now we're coming into warmer months(as it wasnt my own system, I didn't touch it) Couple of suggestions:- LIVING SPACE:- would benefit from a footstool and a throw for the sofa as I kept slipping off. BEDROOM:- would benefit from a wardrobe although plenty of drawer space is available. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Ideally situated for exploring the area. Nice and quiet & secluded if that's your thing.
Because of the compact nature of Woodpecker Cottage there is not room for a wardrobe, there is however a hanging space with coat hangers in the chimney alcove, thank you for the feedback John and Mary
The cottage was absolutely spot on.
Location was excellent, nice and peaceful, very relaxing. I am sure in the summer there would be plenty nice walks to take in. The Hosts were great, ensured we had everything we needed, the cottage is well stocked with all that you would need. There was the loveliest of welcome packs to welcome us, including the table set for dinner with crackers and wine, A really nice touch. We will definitely visit again in the summer.

Lovely property, well maintained and very clean.Owners were friendly but not intrusive. Left us a very generous welcome pack and as this was a Christmas stay the property was also decorated for Christmas which was a nice touch.Photographs were a true representation of the property. We would thoroughly recommend and would return.

Well equipped kitchen. We bought some bird seed to add to the bird table and enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels feeding, would definitely recommend taking some seed with you as this is not provided. Lovely pubs close by and we had a fantastic Sunday lunch locally at The Boot. Only (very small) criticism was the lack of storage space in the bedroom, a small dressing table with additional drawers and a surface to put toiletries and to sit to do hair and make up would have been useful, maybe in place of the mannequin? Otherwise, perfect.

Woodpecker Cottage is simply idyllic; a perfect and beautifully presented retreat set in the most astonishing setting imaginable, a quiet secluded oasis of calm within the magnificent woodlands just north of Orleton.
Decorated stylishly and comfortably with a touch of modernistic classicism and yet protected from the rigours of today's world by a sense of potent tranquillity and charm which even tempts a visit by an occasional deer or two. Excellent walks on the doorstep and two good pubs within a few miles - what more could anyone want?
Such an idyllic and peaceful setting.
Excellent location if you like taking walks and adventuring out, close enough to drive to alot of great places of interest too. We constantly had Deer visiting at the back of the cottage which was such a beautiful sight. Also cannot forget to mention the little welcome package that was there for us as well which gave that added touch of class and hospitality, much appreciated. We will be recommending to friends and family as well as coming back to stay here one day.

Ideally situated on the Mortimer Trail for walking. Pub within walking distance one mile down a quiet lane. Highly recommended for those who enjoy peace and quiet. The welcome pack was much appreciated.

Everything was as it said in the description. Very nice 'welcome pack' to see us through our first tea time. We had a very comfortable and pleasant stay.
Second time we have been back to this lovely cottage and we weren’t disappointed.
Highlight seeing 12 deer travelling through in the garden one evening. Wonderful location, fantastic walking and privacy yet all the local amenities on your doorstep. Yummy cake biscuits and wine were a wonderful treat! Can’t wait to return

The building was comfortable and clean.
Milk, bread, cakes and biscuits had been left; all very nice. However, I wonder if the owners ever look at a property with 'fresh eyes'. On arriving seeing planters with dead plants and faded plastic sun loungers is not welcoming. And from inside the property all windows face nothing but a large expanse of grey gravel and unadorned fencing. It was the most depressing view we've ever experienced. We left after 3 nights of our 7 night booking. A shame as the surrounding countryside was stunning and we would return to the area but to a property with a view.
Thank you for your partially very negative response, on arrival you told us you were here to avoid Christmas, we offered to remove the 2 Christmas trees that we had set up to provide Christmas cheer! You said you would just turn them off. You came to our house to ask for a box of matches because the cooker rings would not light, on your departure we found you had turned off all the fused switches, for the cooker, the water purifier, the internet. This was very irresponsible and reckless behaviour. It was the reason the cooker would not light and could have contaminated the water supply. Thankfully everything worked once the switches were turned back on!! The property is set in a wooded valley, with a stream running through the garden, it was a stable providing accommodation for the horses that served the Edwardian House it was built in 1903, we didn't have a say in its location, the Edwardians did not have the foresight to build it in a better position for its future use as a holiday cottage! The bright green planter tubs were empty at this time of year due to the fact that the deer which frequent the garden straight out of the surrounding thousands of acres of woodland eat anything that's tasty especially in winter. If you read our visitors book you will have learned of the great pleasure the wildlife has given our guests over the years, the gravel doubles as a boules court for an enjoyable interlude from the other delights of North Herefordshire and Ludlow. When you left you did not lock up the property, the door was unlocked and the key was in the key safe! We thank you for your feedback and hope you understand my reasoned reply.
attention to detail required over information given on sykes confirmation letter as one of the contact numbers was incorrect over all a fantastic cottage and mary the owner was very kind and helpful can certainly recomend this cosy comfortable hideout in a very unspoilt area

Bird feeder active with nuthatches, willow, great, coal and blue tits; deer seen occasionally; loads of paths from the cottage. Comfortable, fairly well equipped for two. Generous welcome pack. Only things which we would have appreciated are a DVD player and an electric fire in lounge area. Would thoroughly recommend

A lovely rural location with National Trust properties and towns not far away. We thoroughly relaxed in a clean and cosy home from home.

Deer on the drive to the cottage, and a friendly squirrel occasionally seen at breakfast time. Thoughtful gift of milk, cake chocolate biscuits and a bottle of wine on arrival :-) If you like peace and quiet , this is the cottage for you.
The cottage is at the end of a private lane across from the owners house.
It is in a private, undisturbed location. Very quiet and peaceful. Surrounded by trees and situated on a trail, so you can walk from the doorstep across the fields. We saw deer every day in the drive and heard the owl each evening. The cottage is clean and well equipped although there are no instructions for appliances etc. We had a problem during our two week stay. The owners addressed the matter with the assistance of Sykes. We were compensated fairly. You will enjoy your week and no doubt arrive home refreshed.
Beautiful cottage in a beautiful peaceful setting
We could not find any information about how to use the cooker.
Also whilst there the water softener made a terrific noise. We had to call the owners to come and explain what the noise was. It would be helpful if there had been some information left at the cottage about this. The direction on how to find the cottage is incorrect as the pub has now been renamed the Maidenhead. The facilities at the cottage were excellent and very clean.

The owners thoughtfully provided some lovely things to greet us. Very clean. Cottage is in a private, tranquil setting with access to walks straight from the driveway. Wish we’d had longer to stay but would return for sure.

Woodpecker cottage is in a beautiful location if you want to be secluded.
It's at the end of a single track road. The views are spectacular and there are walks in the area from the cottage. We saw lots of wildlife including, red kite, fox, rabbits and even some dear visited us at the cottage. The cottage itself is very nice. Bed was very comfortable, shower was excellent. There was a gas hob and oven, I'm not used to gas ovens and they take a bit longer to heat up compared to an electric fan oven. There could have been a few more cups and glasses, but we managed OK. There is a problem with the dishwasher as it doesn't clean the dishes, despite trying different programmes and making sure salt and rinse aid was full. Washing machine was good and there's a line outside. The weather was great so we could use the line. Would be good to have a clothes drier inside in case the weather wasn't good. When we arrived there was cake, biscuits, milk and wine for us which was lovely. Plenty of towels and cleaning stuff. Unfortunately the sofa in the living room is really uncomfortable to sit on. It would be good to have a more comfy one. TV has Netflix and iplayer. Ludlow is 10/15 mins drive away and really nice. We ate at The Angel fish restaurant which was fantastic. We don't recommend the Maidenhead (pub walking distance from cottage) it was awful. We could not get a booking at The Boot. We spent the whole week hiking and walking in the area, there was nobody else around despite it being May half term. It was great! Overall would recommend Woodpecker cottage, just sort the dishwasher and the sofa
Amazing location.
Birdlife and deer can be seen in the garden and from the windows. Recommended to anybody wanting to just chill or visit the surrounding area. We will be back. Everything you need plus more with the lovely welcome pack.

Very comfortable, clean and everything you need. Secluded location, great to watch the birds and squirrels and sometimes the deer. Within walking distance of two lovely pubs for meals out, 30 minute walk. Will definitely return again.

Absolutely beautiful and just as advertised, and more. Excellent quality appliances and beautiful quality bedding and towels. Most comfortable bed ever. Welcome pack was very thoughtful and delicious. An idea properly to escape from the world and enjoy peace and quiet.
This is one outstanding cottage and we love it here, love sitting outside in the morning with a steaming mug of tea and just watching the birds at the feeders!

The extremely high standard of the interior finish was even more than anticipated - loved the colour scheme. The local wildlife provided much entertainment! We recognise just how much hard work & thought went into the building & design - very much appreciated & thank you for the welcome goodies - another unexpected touch. Very highly recommended!!

Brilliant location to get away from it but still in easy reach of all necessary facilities. Wonderfully private and a really nice touch to have bird feeders to watch the comings and goings. Saw deer in the garden which was a treat. Beautifully furnished and so nice and warm. We certainly hope to pay another visit. The bread, wine and cake was a lovely touch. Thank you for being a brilliant host.
superb cottage, due to family tragedy judt needed to get away and boy did we choose the ideal location, just bird song and rustling leaves, so relaxing, also so clean and 1st class amenities and so cosy and comfortable, excellent and we are back in a couple of weeks, mid February.

This is the best cottage we have come across.
It is on it's own at the end of a farm track surrounded by trees and is very quiet. It is extremely clean and the fixtures and fittings are up to scratch and has everything you could ask for. Ideal for a very relaxing break. We would certainly recommend this to anyone.
A proper little gem!
Comfy, cosy and clean. The most peaceful rental we've ever stayed in. So much hard work and love put into creating this space. Pots of tea grew cold as we watched the birds on the feeders! We were lucky enough to see 4 visiting deer one evening. It was such a pleasure to come back "home" after a day out! Local pubs were both very good, lots of pretty towns and villages nearby. Pack your binoculars, and if you're not a National Trust member already, it's well worth buying a membership, you'd pretty much get the fee back by the end of a week, and there are gorgeous properties very close to the cottage. Thanks for our very relaxing holiday and the thoughtful goodies you left for our arrival. We're definitely coming back as soon as we can and would recommend this place to anyone.
We had a lovely stay, the cottage was everything we wanted, peaceful , warm ,cosy , we saw John once and Mary twice , but they where there if we needed them, we mentioned that we like star gazing and Mary promptly returned with cushions for the outside recliners, and when we we not doing that we watched TV great to have the options off Netflix and Prime, thank you Mary and Jhn for a great time we will return one day , if the property is still available .

Loved the location, secluded and quiet, the deers were fun to see, and the cottage had all the amenities you needed and is decorated to a high standard.
Mary the owner was very pleasant and helpful. The goodies were lovely, especially the cake and biscuits. One very small critique would be of the outdoor seating and table, maybe time to renew or look at them.

They arrived later that evening to welcome us which was a lovely touch. It was in a great location for visiting Ludlow, Hereford and Hay on Wye. The scenery was spectacular particularly the orchards full of apple blossom.
Accommodation cosy and tastefully decorated, no expense spared.
We also found some unexpected generous extras. We visited many historical attractions in this delightful and peaceful area.
Useful to get a map of the area for walks etc before you go as some of the sign posts etc are not that clear and it is a wonderful area to explore directly from the cottage.

Exactly as the photos with some goodies on arrival and the table laid ready for our arrival. A very relaxing stay, well worth the wait after postponing for a year.

would recommend this cosy warm cottage to everybody. sadly we didn’t see any wild deer but we did hear the owl .there’s walks from right outside the door to witch are well worth going on

Our second visit to Woodpecker Cottage more than lived up to our expectations.
It’s clean, comfortable and a perfect place for a relaxing break away from it all. Set in a large secluded garden with immediate access to a variety of walks from the doorstep it is a hidden gem.
A fabulous accommodation in a pretty rural setting.
The cottage was in pristine condition & very comfortable. The outdoor furniture could do with revamping but otherwise perfect. We wish there had been windows to the rear of the property for wildlife viewing but we were so lucky to see not only 6 deer outside our door, but a badger! Owners even provided a torch to help see these.
We are an elderly couple that had been locked down by Covid 19 till now.
Our gamble in June to book a self-catering holiday in August came off and we could not have chosen a better location than Woodpecker Cottage. Its easy access in a sylvan environment and its entirely ground-floor lay-out were ideal for our restricted mobility. It suited us to eat some of our meals in pubs and garden centres in the area and some in the cottage. We were able to enjoy a number of all-ability walks in the area.
A truly delightful, well equipped and very tastefully decorated cottage in a perfectly tranquil location.
The owners are very helpful, but non-intrusive. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet...the only sounds you'll hear is wind in the trees, birds, sheep, cows and if you're lucky you'll get to see th deer visiting the back garden at dusk. Ideal location for cycling, running or walking.....or exploring the area. Orleton village is charming and has a delightful community owned pub, (The Boot Inn), with good food and a good array of beers and wines. Staying at Woodpecker Cottage was wonderful.
Lovely cottage, with every possible facility, in a beautiful quiet setting.
We had a really good week at Woodpecker Cottage and I think the actual cottage looked bigger than the photos suggested.
We got talking to Mary's brother and friend soon after arrival and they let me have a look at a vintage US Army Jeep they had renovated which was really nice of them. We made full use of the brick built BBQ and the location of the cottage was nice and peaceful - saw the occasional horse's going past the end of the drive and a few people on bikes using the path which is part of the Mortimer Trail which is literally 50 yards away. Really comfy bed and sitting area - large TV with Netflix and other channels. Overall we enjoyed everything about the cottage and would certainly like to go back and would recommend anyone to go. Beautiful place
This is a really nice cottage, well equipped and pleasant to stay in, this was our third time there and no doubt we’ll be back.
It was a little difficult the first year as the post code isn’t quite correct and takes you to a place called Waterloo. It’s a lot easier to find if you go via the Bakers Arms at Orleton (originally the Maidenhead) however when you arrive it is well worth the effort. Highly recommended.
I had a really enjoyable week at Woodpecker.
It is very warm and comfortable, and is in a very nice setting. I would like to make a return visit.
The cottage was exceptional.
The owners had left bread, cake, tea, coffee and milk. This made us feel really welcome. The cottage has everything you could need. We would like to thank the owners for their welcome. The attention to detail in the cottage is excellent. We would recommend the cottage to anyone. Again I would like to thank the owners.
The cottage was spotless clean and the bed comfortable.
It had an excellent shower over the bath.The furnishings were of a high standard. I would recommend this cottage. It is close to many interesting places including Hereford Cathedral and ludlow which are worth a visit.

The accommodation was ideal in a part of the country that we love.
The conversion from stables was very impressive and the furnishings and equipment were of a high standard. The owners were attentive without being intrusive. The dull wet weather did not enhance the dark [paint finish to the interior though.
Woodpecker cottage is set in a beautiful wood ,is tranquility its self and after getting some birdseed the show of birds outside our window was amazing The cottage is well set out and we spent many evenings by the fire pit watching the stars

I really felt at home! The countryside is very nice and you're far away from the crowd. The hosts are very kind and helpful, yet discrete.

The cottage was very clean and well appointed for a self catering holiday and we were made to feel welcome by the owner. The photographs don’t do Woodpecker Cottage full justice. It is extremely well laid out, comfortable and spacious for two people with good outside space. There’s also a footpath 50 yards from the door leading to extensive walks, so no need to use car to find a walking trail.
We did appreciate the goodies the owners left for us, and the fact that someone called round to check all was well.

It was lovely and warm with a super comfy bed and power shower. What more could we want! A home from home! Mary and John were very friendly, on hand if we needed anything but respected our privacy. The welcome pack was very much appreciated, fresh bread, fruit cake, coffee biscuits, milk and a refreshing bottle of wine, thank you so much. Lots of beautiful walks over hills and through woods. Loved Hereford Cathederal, Croft Castle, for the 5 1/2 mile walk in the woods, saw a dear and woodpecker... Amazing! Love Shropshire too... Can't wait to return.

Very comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen. We stayed over the Easter weekend and the weather was great so made use of the BBQ. The welcome pack was a really nice touch - especially the Easter eggs - thank you! A lovely area to explore so we hope to be back!

Very comfy bed, kitchen very well equipped and very quiet and peaceful . Lots of places to visit around the area. We've already booked again for next year, looking forward to returning. The owners are on hand should you need anything, on arrival there was a very nice welcome pack which included milk bread cake biscuits and wine. A very nice touch and very welcoming.

This is a lovely place to stay, warm and welcoming.
This is the second time we have been and wouldn’t hesitate to go back again. First timers may find it a challenge to find as the sat nav doesn’t appear to work in this area and seems to want to take you Orleton Rise Holiday Park, written instructions from A49 helped enormously, once you have found Woodpecker Cottage you obviously ignor the sat nav, and it is well worth the effort. The cottage is in a lovely setting with a walk close by that takes you around the area and back to the cottage door.
Woodpecker Cottage was certainly a 'hidden gem'.
Not only was it extremely well presented but had the bonus of the tranquil setting and the beauty of nature all around, including secluded woodland garden and stream! It was an ideal base from which to explore the nearby National Trust properties and English Heritage sites, Ludlow and surrounding villages and the wonderful Mortimer Trail. Whether you have a long weekend or a week, Woodpecker Cottage will ensure your break away is unique!
Yes it was a beautiful cottage all mod cons owners made us feel welcome leaving us a welcome package of goodies lovely country walks local pub very friendly overall had a great week thanks.

A real home from home. Very well thought out, clean with lovely decor. Very cosy during our stay in January. Whilst the cottage is a mile away from the local pub, this is down a muddy track, which I think in winter if it snows or becomes very icy, this could be a problem in a car. A great base to explore some some local towns.
Firstly we were met by the owner as we’d got lost and it was very dark.
He was really friendly and obliging. We stayed at Woodpecker Cottage Christmas week and had a fantastic time. The cottage itself was stunning and was beautifully decorated and clean (with the welcomes addition of a couple of Christmas trees!) We has everything we needed, plus a few treats left for us by the owners. The location is not too far out from Ludlow and just over a mile to a lovely little pub. Would definitely recommend and stay again! :)
We loved the location so peaceful and private, it was a very comfortable cottage and beautiful condition, plenty of places to visit and Ludlow is a fantastic place to visit and browse

Beautiful cottage in every respect, the facilities and everything inside the cottage were five star.
Beautiful sitting out in the remote Herefordshire countryside, at dusk, pure solitude other than watching owls, bats, foxes and squirrels just going about their business. John and Mary were available if needed, but we managed fine, lovely upon arrival to receive a large free homemade coffee and walnut cake, rustic bread, milk, a bottle of wine and other sundries, Mary even came over to the cottage to welcome us and gave us vegetables from her garden which was very kind and thoughtful. All in all i'd recommend this beautiful cottage to any couple wanting a totally relaxing holiday. The local town of Ludlow is only 15 minutes away and there are two nice pubs which serve lovely food about ten minutes away. Needless to say me and the good lady are two very pleased people, we'll definitely be back, well done. John and Jane.
we were very lucky that the cottage was so comfortable as the car let us down But asking Mr Worthing for a garage his son has one and he arranged for him to fix it which he did the day after, My wife and I were realy pleased to have such excelent people who go the extra mile to help their guests.

The cottage was very comfortable and very well equipped.
We would definitely go back again to Woodpecker Cottage and are planning a trip there next spring. The owners are lovely and friendly and provided detailed instructions on the location of the Cottage as the sat nav is a little imprecise. They provided a phone number, should you have any difficulty in locating the Cottage.
