Mortimers Cross is a small village best known for the historic battle fought in 1461 during the Wars of the Roses. The village now has a scattering of cottages, a shop, a local inn and is home to the English Heritage Mortimers Cross Watermill on the River Lugg. Nearby is the little hamlet of Lucton nestled in beautiful Herefordshire countryside on the borders of Radnorshire and Shropshire. The thriving village of Yarpole is also nearby, situated equidistant between the pretty market towns of Ludlow and Leominster. This area is home to the famous Mortimer Trail, a long distance walking route and nearby is the National Trust’s Croft Castle with its medieval fishponds. Enjoy a walk on the nearby Bircher Common, an area of lowland heath offering lovely views of the surrounding Marches, wild horses, sheep grazing and deer, ideal for enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the area. Sample Herefordshire's famous cider or discover Hereford with its fascinating Mappa Mundi world map and the captivating chained library, home to a collection of rare and ancient books. The pretty medieval market town of Ludlow makes a great day out, with more than 500 listed buildings and a magnificent castle, and also within easy reach are Bromyard, Ledbury, Ironbridge, Hay-on-Wye and the Long Mynd.
