“Valley House proved to be the perfect place for my family and friends gathering in celebration of my 80th birthday, with people coming and going during the week.”

Everyone felt it to be like a world of its own, hidden away despite the proximity of Devizes and the A360, where they could relax and enjoy being together or withdraw for time alone. We did feel some improvements possible: 1. the file of information about the property is minimal. More specific instructions re the hot-tub might have prevented us needing to call the owner for advice on adjusting the temperature.2. We would have been glad to use the coffee machine but didn't find any instructions ...

We would have been glad to use the coffee machine but didn't find any instructions until packing as we hadn't used the cupboard where they were hidden....and we couldn't source the right pods nor were any supplied. 3.Instructions re departure were missing too and we were not sure whether to strip the beds (we did) or not. 4. The instructions re the Nature Trail were useless as they didn't specify in which direction to "walk straight out of the house" ! A map showing its location in relation to the house, which could include where in the grounds we would stray into the neighbours' property would have helped enormously 5. A proper history of the property and its time as a mill would have been interesting. Several people had a problem finding the house, even if they found the drive correctly. It bears no name on it that we could find and the view on approach is totally different from the one on line. They went on further looking for it! A disappointment was the inefficiency of the dishwasher which we ended up using only once (and only one tablet was supplied). Having put it on for an eco wash, lasting over 3 hours, we had to wash nearly everything again by hand as it was still dirty. This may explain why we found it necessary to wash much of the crockery, pans and glassware before we could use them. We also noted that quite a bit of the crockery and glassware is chipped. The cleaners arrived early and I informed them of this. They were going to report it to the maintenance person. None of this really impinged on our enjoyment of the week but could improve things for those who come after us. Several of the group would love to help in the garden if they were nearer, especially to revive those beds directly around the house. We all enjoyed the sight of ripening apples and pears, hundreds of blackcurrants and gooseberries as well as the huge blackberries in the wilder areas.
