“The communication from the start was efficient and informative.”

We arrived a tad later than the 5pm entry time and was greeted by Joanne who lives next door. She said she would come by later to show us the pool, how the cover and steps work. We booked The Stone Wheel Cottage for the swimming pool and it did not disappoint. The water was clean and perfect temperature. We enjoyed the pool daily and was nice that it was just us as we like to leisurely swim and no jumping or splashing guests. The accommodation was welcoming from the Hollyhocks in the centre of ...

We booked The Stone Wheel Cottage for the swimming pool and it did not disappoint. The water was clean and perfect temperature. We enjoyed the pool daily and was nice that it was just us as we like to leisurely swim and no jumping or splashing guests. The accommodation was welcoming from the Hollyhocks in the centre of the table to the fresh clean bed linen. Joanne also dropped off dome fresh eggs from her chickens. The conservatory is a sun trap and I imagine lovely in the cooler weather. We painted pictures in the evening in there and it was beautiful under the stars (London is not as clear due to the light pollution). The kitchen was fully equipped for meals. There is a lovely butchers a 4 minute walk away which sells good quality meat and sourced locally. The showers were clean and powerful, perfect. Would we stay again? Yes, of course. Do not hesitate to book. We had a lovely week and made lovely memories. Thank you Joanne.X

“A lovely spacious cottage, perfect for 5 adults and our dog.”

The pool was great especially as we were there during a heatwave. However, it is worth noting that there are a number of steps down to it and only a partial rail which was a little tricky for our disabled son. Once down though, he had a wonderful time.

“The owner was lovely, helpful and friendly.”

Thank you to her for being such a lovely person who was accommodating when we arrived very early.The accommodation was good, although was a little worn out. The swimming pool was a real delight with a gorgeous view. Unfortunately, we weren't able to sleep at all because of the boiler kicking off spasmodically during the night and there were nesting birds in the eaves. The crows were so noisy from very early morning. It really let it all down because 3 nights without sleep was no fun. Loved everything else, though, and we would consider going again if the owners mended the boiler and got rid of the birds nesting in the eaves/roof/rafters.

“I would not recommend anyone stay at this property.”

There were numerous issues during our stay, but the main concerns were the cleanliness and facilities. The whole place is run down, the furniture is past its best, and the property feels unloved and in need of some TLC. While we did eventually receive a refund, it did not change our experience of the accommodation or the impact it had on our holiday.

“A tired property in a good location, Hook Norton is a loverly Cotswold village.”

Sadly a number of previously reported issues had not been fixed and reporting heating shortfalls produced a visit from the owners who were friendly but did not sort out any of the faults. Lack of detailed property information - no notes on heating and hot water for example) did not help. Issues like the broken bathroom blind could be easily fixed so a better regime would easily restore a good property.

“Disappointed.”

The shower in the upstairs bathroom is leaking onto the window sill in the kitchen below. The bottom oven is not working. The conservatory is very nice, but there is a pane of glass half in and half out of the frame on one of the windows. Only one radiator is working in the lounge. The issues we encounter had been noted in the maintance book by previous guests, months ago but don't appear to have been rectified. Don't understand how Sykes have not picked up these things on their inspection of the properties they advertise. Unless of course inspections are not carried out. In my opinion the property needs some work done on it to bring it up to the standard guests would expect.

Dear Mrs Larsen Thank you for your feedback on Stonewheel Cottage which we have noted. Firstly, we had the leak from the bathroom fixed as soon as you told us about the problem. There is nothing leaking from the bathroom now. Secondly, there is nothing wrong with the oven at all! When you turn the bottom oven on, you must also turn the knob for how long you want it on for. It is there to make sure the guests don’t leave the oven on. Apologies if one of the perspex panes in the conservatory was adrift - that was immediately rectified. Regarding one of the radiators in the living room that wasn’t working, we had someone in to fix it but it still doesn’t seem to be working optimally so we have a plumber coming on Wednesday to sort that out. It is a pity you didn’t raise these all of these concerns during your stay and we could have been able to sort things out sooner. “The property was perfect for our family (4 adults, 2 children under 4).”

The bedrooms were all large and a travel cot was put up for us on request. There was a large kitchen diner and lots of seating in the lounge and adjoining conservatory. The pool was amazing. The shops and pub were only a short walk. Communication with owner was excellent. We would happily book to stay again.

“We enjoyed our stay at Stone Wheel Cottage.”

The cottage is very comfortable and spacious, and I loved sitting on the patio under the apple tree for my morning cuppa! The swimming pool was a bonus and it was easy to arrange to use it. Joanne and Howard were very helpful and on hand if needed. Hook Norton is a lovely village with a shop and pub within walking distance. We'd love to come back for another visit sometime.

“Very disappointed, this is a nice property but is in need of a thorough deep clean, some TLC and redecoration.”

Amongst other things we found a rusty microwave and an old TV without remote control (not a Smart TV as described) which the owners did replace when we raised the issue. We have made a complaint about all the issues we had, but the owners seemed to think replacing these items was accommodating us when they should not have been there in the first place. The owners also think that splashed food on skirtings, scruffy decor, cobwebs throughout, dust everywhere, dirty drawers, old food in the cupboard etc etc is cleaning to a good standard. Is it acceptable to have broken funiture and torn seat covers in the kitchen? I don't think so. Sykes have not been helpful with our complaint and just to say this is not about compensation (none has been offered from either the owners or Sykes) it's just very wrong to think this is ok. I must say looking at other reviews, although there are not many, I feel like I stayed in a different place. However I cannot find a review that praises the cleanliness so that speaks volumes really. Not even an apology from the owners or Sykes which is appalling. On the plus side the cottage was comfortable. I have used Sykes for many years but will not be using them again.

The owners were truly delightful. The cottage itself was everything and more that we had hoped for. It felt so secure and safe, and was perfectly located for our touring around the Cotswolds. It was perfect having parking for two vehicles, the pool was a true delight with it being hot while we were there, and the fresh lilies that were left for us by the owner made the whole house smell beautiful. We can’t recommend it enough.

“Gorgeous property and great, friendly hosts, in a beautiful idyllic village setting.”

Nothing was too much trouble and we were also gifted some lovely fresh eggs from their hens! The cottage has some lovely age-related quirks and the addition of access to the swimming pool was amazing. A few areas of the cottage ( kitchen seat covers, poolside slabs) could do with a tiny touch of tlc, however this in no way affected the wonderful quality of our stay.

“The cottage is in a lovely area but felt a little ‘tired’ inside with a lot of items looking like they were past their best or broken.”

Plenty of room for our group of 6 adults and 1 infant and although there is a pool it too was not at its best with a nest of ants under some of the toys at one end. It’s a shame as, with a bit of attention and some funds spent, it has the potential to be a great holiday destination.

“Excellent cottage.”

Could benefit from free standing toilet roll holders in each bathroom and a full handrail all way down steps to pool. These are only minor things and did not spoil our stay. Pool is fantastic. Local facilities very good. Owners very helpful and friendly.

“We really enjoyed our few days at the cottage.”

Our granddaughters loved the swimming pool. There are renovations ongoing which should make access to the pool better. There was an issue with a broken floorboard but this was speedily attended to once the owner was aware of it. My only issue really was the late check in (6pm). Most places allow a 3pm check in and I wonder if that could be managed here? Generally a lovely place to have a holiday.

“Very spacious property which needs some love and attention.”

I would describe the property as "tired". Things for improvement - broken glass panes in conservatory and large unsightly stain on lino need replacing, threadbare cushion covers and ancient bar of soap and worn out scourer in kitchen need discarding. Open packet of biscuits left in cupboard. Scribble on wall in hallway and peeling paint and cobwebs on window frames. Although we made good use of the pool the surround needs a good clean up as moss/mud ends up in the pool. The owners were very nice but a little money spent on redecoration and a deep clean could make this property 5 * as opposed to the 3* it merits at present.

“A lovely comfortable, spacious, well equipped property and a very accommodating owner.”

One issue though - frustratingly, the upstairs shower is unusable - the shower head doesn’t locate and move properly in the holder and as a result the water sprays way past the shower screen and onto the floor. Additionally, the shower is fed directly from the bath taps and it is impossible to get the water at a tolerable/constant temperature ie. it’s either scalding hot or freezing cold - just when you think you’ve got a temperature you can live with it suddenly changes. I recommend the owner takes a shower in this bathroom to understand the difficulties. For us (a party of 6 adults) it meant we were queuing for the downstairs wet room which meant it took over 2 hours for us all to shower before we could start our day.

“We had a lovely break the owners were very accommodating, the kitchen was fairly well equipped, I did have to purchase some oven trays to cook as there were none in the cottage.”

The local pub served fantastic food and is only a short walk down the road. The cottage is looking a little tired in places and some areas could do with a little more attention when cleaning, but overall it was very nice and we would stay again.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend in the cottage.”

It was comfortable and homely. Local pub was just a short walk away. It was great to spend time in the heated pool, a good start to the morning. Enjoyed chatting to the owners Joanne and Howard. “It was a last minute booking after a recent family bereavement, so generally, we were happy with the booking.”

However, there were a number of things we felt were in desperate need of modernisation. First of all, the bathrooms. The showers were particularly bad, the one in the bathroom upstairs didn't even attach to the wall, and there was no mirror above the sink so it was impossible to shave. There was a mirror above the sink in the wet room downstairs but the light wasn't working! The bedroom with the twin beds in (where we put our children) was particularly cold, and when the heating came on, the boiler in the room beneath them was so loud it woke them up at 5am for three days straight! I do understand that upgrading the boiler isn't cheap, but it was the noisiest I've ever heard and could easily be replaced with a much quieter one. All the pipes throughout the house banged loudly when the heating came on. Some urgent plumbing work is required. The TV was tiny and could be updated, there was no option to use catch-up or apps etc, something the owners could easily rectify. But I think the thing which really was unforgivable was that there were huge dog poos everywhere inside the grounds. Why these hadn't been picked up I really don't understand. I think it's obvious that this property is managed by a large agency who are clearly based several hundred miles away, and don't get to inspect it on a regular basis. I couldn't recommend staying here to anyone until some major refurb and clean up work is undertaken

“A really delightful clean and spacious cottage in an idyllic setting and with lovely owners (and their dogs) who have provided everything you need for a relaxing holiday, and an indoor heated pool - you don't get better!”

The surrounding area is all chocolate-box pretty and there are many places to take long walks and see the countryside, as well as lovely villages to ramble through. If you're looking for a calm retreat to unwind and recharge, then this is the place for you. Our only regret is not booking a longer stay, but look forward to coming back again in the future!

Hundreds of years old, sitting within the grounds of the owners' substantial period property, this sweet and charming cottage retains all its period charm but with much added comfort and style.

Simply furnished and the perfect retreat.

The kitchen / diner is comfortable and well furnished, the Living Room spacious and cosy, with a wonderful log-burner, while upstairs are three good sized bedrooms, each smart and simple in presentation with very comfortable beds, and a separate family bathroom.

There's a garden outside with loads of room to relax and unwind, and the wow factor being provided by the covered, heated swimming pool(In use April-October and bookable via the owner) However, with a host of village pubs within walking distance you may prefer to take the fresh air when strolling for lunch or otherwise!

This is a blissful retreat where you are convenient for a host of Cotswolds gems.

If you're so inclined Daylesford and Soho Farmhouse are nearby, otherwise Chipping Norton is just 7 mins drive away.

We love it here and believe you will and your pooch too! 2 well behaved dogs welcome charges apply.

Chipping Norton 5 miles; Stratford-upon-Avon 22 miles; Oxford 25 miles.

A picturesque village with many honey-coloured historic buildings, thatched cottages, a thriving community and its very own steam driven brewery, the last of its kind in the country. The village boasts a well-stocked shop, Post Office, several pubs and restaurants and many lovely walks can be enjoyed from the village with the D'Arcy Dalton Way passing through the village. The market town of Chipping Norton lies south of the village in the Cotswold Hills, plays host to many festivals throughout the year, has an abundance of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as a theatre and the oldest golf course in Oxfordshire. Historic Banbury nestles on the banks of the River Cherwell in the Cherwell Valley and offers many restaurants, cafes, a canalside museum, cinema and local theatre, plus the annual Banbury Folk Festival attracts many visitors each year. Blenheim Place, the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill is also close by. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and known as ‘The City of Dreaming Spires’ has an abundance of attractions, namely the 38 colleges of the university, the oldest university teaching room, Bodleian Library, Botanic Gardens and museums, as well as playing host to many festivals and markets. Stratford-upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare, Warwick with its magnificent castle and Royal Leamington Spa make a lovely day out. Enjoy many types of motor and superbike racing at Silverstone or spend a day shopping at Bicester Village Designer Outlet.
