“We had a wonderful stay, stunning views, huge fully enclosed garden which the dog enjoyed and fab location.”

We enjoyed the dark skies, spotted shooting stars and the peaceful retreat. The cottage was home from home, extremely well equipped, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Jane was very welcoming and helpful and the locals polite. Helpful notices and instructions were provided to give necessary information about the stay. I would have loved to have learned some of the history of the building. I highly recommend this cottage to anymore looking for a restful break. Lots of original features ...

As a previous customer, I am always glad to return. Views of the Malverns to the north and of Hay Bluff to the west, across fields of wheat in summer. Many good walks locally. Poets' Paths in Dymock in the vicinity. Highly recommended.

“This was our third visit to The Olde House and as on previous visits everything was just perfect.”

We had a lovely time with comfortable beds giving us relaxed and perfect nights sleep. The owner Jane made sure we had everything we needed and was very friendly. Whilst there we visited the Dean Forest Heritage centre that we recommend if you've got a couple or three hours to spare.

“This is such a lovely quirky cottage.”

It is absolutely beautiful and so comfortable. The immaculate garden is a wonderful space full of shade and nature. You can really see the care and thought that has been poured in to both the cottage and the garden. The kitchen has everything thing you could need. We had a relaxing week and we chose not to go out very much because the space just made you feel so tranquil and calm. I am sure we will be back to visit again soon.

Very quiet location but within easy reach of shops and attractions in Ross on Wye. Great location for walks and fishing in the local area. We brought our dog and the large secure garden at the cotttage was great for letting her have a run around. The owners were very helpful and live next door if you need anything. We would recommend this place.

“We had a lovely week in The Olde House.”

The accommodation was very comfortable and the garden was beautiful - our dog loved it. You need to be careful on the stairs and (as stated in the listing) they are not suitable for the elderly or disabled. There is a field opposite the house where dogs can be walked, and nearby Dymock Woods were lovely to walk around (5 minute car drive). We went to Tintern Abbey and the Forest Of Dean whilst we were there, both lovely places. Ross-on-Wye was a little disappointing, although good for takeaways (can recommend Seven Seas chippy, Dragon House Chinese and Zak Zak Indian). Would definitely come back.

“Myself and my partner and two dogs have just returned from a weeks break at The Olde House and had a fantastic time.”

The cottage was immaculate had all the amenities you will require for a comfortable stay. The beds were very comfortable and the peace and quiet was heaven. We were also able to enjoy the wonderful garden and our dogs loved it. Jane was in hand if we required anything and met with us on our first and last day to ensure we had everything we need. If you are looking for accessible walks and lovely scenery you will find it here. We visited Ross on Wye and the Forest of Dean which were lovely days out. We will definitely return in the future. We have stayed in many Sykes Cottages and this is definitely one of the best. Thank you Jane and Peter for a wonderful stay.

“This is a lovely, quirky, comfortable cottage.”

The garden is a slice of heaven that young and old will appreciate. The area is extremely peaceful and its lovely to walk the roads around the cottage. The location is great offering many places to visit. Cottage is clean and well equipped. Everything you could possibly need in the kitchen. On evenings its chilly its nice to be able to light a fire in the living room (everything provided). The owners were friendly and helpful and called in on the first and last evening. They are nearby if anything arises. We enjoyed our stay at the Olde House and would definitely recommend.

The house was quirky but very homely and comfortable, it had everything we needed, the garden was amazing and the location was very peaceful. Other people have commented on how friendly and helpful the owners were without being at all intrusive and we agree completely with that! They were lovely. We went to Ross on Wye, Hereford, Newent and Gloucester while we were here, all places which are worth a visit. Ross had some lovely places for meals. Newent had a lovely lake and quaint shops. Upton Bishop itself was a great place for walking our dog. A thoroughly enjoyable holiday and we would happily stay in The Old House again.

“This has been the best cottage we have stayed in as a family, the house was spacious yet homely and had everything you needed for the stay.”

Some cottages provide the bare minimum of plates/glasses/ cook wear etc but this had it in abundance so no shortage. The owners of the property were lovely, and made you feel very welcomed. The garden was immaculate and it was lovey to be able to sit out and have dinner. Great base for exploring. Quiet cottage with lovely views Couldn’t fault it and would definitely recommend and go back to.

“The property is in the perfect location, in a 30mile radius to lots of beautiful walks.”

With some walks just on the door step. The garden is perfect if you have dogs, nice and big for them to get some exercise in. It is well looked after and the kitchen of fully stocked with all appliances you may need. The only things we found a tiny issue, was the shower sometimes wouldn’t heat up so you would often have to turn it off and on multiple times. And the downstairs sofa bed was extremely hard, so wasn’t the best night sleep. Other than that it was perfect and the whole house and gardens are very well maintained. It’s our second time visiting and I don’t think it will be the last :)

The cottage is lovely, spacious and comfortable. The garden is absolutely beautiful and very safe if you have dogs. The village has nice walks and few miles away there is The Alma Inn pub which is fantastic. The church in the village is a little gem. My husband and son have had problems with WiFi but Jane said that she would look into it to improve it if possible. If you are a family with dogs it is definitely a nice place to stay!! “We’ve just stayed for a week at the olde house with family, (4 Adults, 2 children) and were delighted with our stay & choice of property.”

The property is well equipt and had everything we required for our stay. The owners Jane & Peter were great and live close by which is a bonus. Friendly people and to hand but at the same time not intrusive. The Garden is fantastic and very well maintained. We enjoyed many evenings sat out on the patio admiring the garden. Great garden furniture & BBQ is available for cooking outdoors. The garden was also secure and our 8 month old Labrador also loved it. This property is situated in a small quiet village location so ideal if this is what you are looking for. As there were six of us staying we utilised the snug as a third bedroom which was fine as this left the lounge & dining area along with the patio via sliding doors from the lounge for living spaces. The bed in the snug is a high quality sofa bed that looked new and we both commented on how comfortable this was. To summarise this property ticked all of the boxes & we wouldn’t hesitate recommending to others. It’s a property we will look to stay at again in the future. Thanks Jane & Peter. The property was in the most beautiful setting and the garden was beautiful the walks from cottage are amazing sadly the beds were very uncomfortable and the 3 bedroom is a put up sofa bed which was like laying on a piece of wood I did tell the owner that the mattress are not good and the stairs I would not recommend anyone of 65 to use them and cooker seal was gone as our cooking took forever but I also told owners about that but other then those bits it was a wonderful holiday

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you found the beds uncomfortable, the mattresses were replaced in 2019, just before we closed the property due to the pandemic. We understand that comfort is a very personal thing and some people prefer a very soft mattress. As the description mentions, there is a snug with a sofa bed, this doubles up as a 3rd bedroom for guests to use. We have taken your comments on board during your stay and have ordered a new one to be delivered within the next 4 weeks. The cooker seal has also been dealt with and has been resolved. We appreciate that you brought additional guests that we not part of the booking details. “We just loved this cottage from the moment we walked through the door.”

The comfortable lounge with the open fire and everything needed in a home from home. We particularly liked the older part of the building with so many original features. Just loved the enormous old fire place in the snug. The stairs and doors amazing, what stories they could tell. We slept very well and often late. We spent a lot of time sitting on the patio listening to the birdsong and watching the bees and butterflies busy in the borders and relaxing. The garden itself is enormous and extends a long way back. We recommend The Alma at Linton. You don't need to drive vast distances to find places to visit, Monmouth, Ross on Wye, Forest of Dean to name a few. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather for time of the year. Lots of wild daffodils everywhere. Thank you Jane and Peter for a lovely holiday. Thank you Jane for the Chinese lanterns and Cyclamen plants which are now in our garden in Lincolnshire.

“Second visit to the Olde House and just as fantastic as our first visit.”

Unfortunately more grey and moody skies than wall to wall blue like last year, but the views and walks were still breath taking and the garden was still blooming lovely! The house accommodated a family of 5 and a dog very comfortably. Kitchen is a great size and all utensils, pots, plans etc you could need are there. The owners are a stone throw away and so helpful but never intrusive. Just fabulous.

The cottage is very well equipped , large bedrooms and bathroom. pleasant lounge and dining area. The garden in summer would be beautiful with far reaching views over Malvern hills. the view from bedroom was superb . The owners were very pleasant and when we had two very minor problems they were sorted out very quickly. It was an excellent for what our family required over the Christmas period. The area around Ross is excellent, eating pubs that supply good basic food at good prices try the Man of Ross, King Charles 2nd, Royal Hotel good bar with excellent seating area outside with far reaching views over the river Why.

The property

A traditional semi-detached 19th century cottage located in the Herefordshire village of Upton Bishop.

This lovely cottage is surrounded by beautiful countryside which offers many walks, cycle routes and horseback riding.

The cottage benefits from many original features including stone flag floors, ceiling beams, elm doors and a wonderful elm staircase.

A very well-equipped kitchen leads to a spacious snug with a double sofa bed.

There is a lovely dining room to seat all guests and a warm and welcoming sitting room with open fire and lovely views across the large cottage garden.

Make your way upstairs to the first floor double bedroom and cottage bathroom.

The second floor has a twin bedroom with long distant views to the Malvern Hills.

Outside, the wonderful enclosed rear garden can be enjoyed at any time of day with a large lawned area for picnics and family games and a patio with furniture where guests can enjoy alfresco dining on a summer's evening.

Take a stroll to the village pub which serves home-cooked food using local produce, as well as a good selection of real ales.

The ancient town of Newent and pretty riverside town of Ross-on-Wye are both close by.

Why not visit a National Trust property or try one of the many outdoor activities on offer in the area?

About the location

UPTON BISHOP

Ross-on-Wye 3 miles.

The thriving village of Upton Bishop lies in beautiful Herefordshire countryside close to the border with Gloucestershire and has an excellent village pub, craft centre and is just 3 miles from the pretty riverside town of Ross-on-Wye. Upton Bishop offers many lovely walks and cycle routes with the Herefordshire Trail and Wye Valley Walk both close by. Nearby Gorsley offers a well-stocked village shop with Post Office and off licence, along with a popular free house pub with restaurant that's renowned for its Nepalese cuisine both in the county and beyond. Newent, one of the most attractive market towns in the Vale of Leadon and formerly a Roman settlement, has a wide range of attractions, including the half-timbered Old Market Hall dating back to 1668, traditional inns, restaurants, tea rooms and individual shops. Overlooking a large loop in the beautiful River Wye is the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye, situated in the picturesque Wye Valley. This attractive town has timbered Tudor houses clustered around the striking 17th century Market Hall, and there are excellent shops, pubs and restaurants to suit every taste. Stroll along the lovely river bank, take a river cruise or view the surrounding countryside from a hot-air balloon. Try the local wine at the Three Choirs Vineyard or visit the waterfront city of Gloucester with its Roman foundations, Victorian docklands and Norman Cathedral.
