Katharine “A beautiful cosy clean cottage.”
A large garden for our dog to explore. The kitchen was well stocked with kitchen implements etc. The owner had left Easter eggs, along with milk, tra and coffee, which was a lovely suprise.

The beds were so comfy!

Suky “Amazing place, our dog loved the garden.”
Lovely cottage, needs some updating decor wise and floorboards are very squeaky. Just needs abit of work inside maintenance but these things are easily fixed and did not affect our holiday. Jane is lovely and her dog is so friendly. We will definitely book again!
- Suky, April 2025 -
Lynda “A cosy holiday let in a good position for exploring the surrounding area, or just staying put and enjoying home comforts.”
The garden and river running alongside is lovely. The owners were friendly and helpful. The only drawback is that the shower is pathetic. Coupled with low water pressure (we think), the head needed cleaning (which we did) but nothing beats a power shower!
- Lynda, December 2024Thankyou so much for your lovely comments, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. The Mira Sport Shower head has now been replaced, to improve performance after reading your useful comment. :) Property Owner

Amy “Comfortable little cottage in a beautiful quiet location.”
The large secure garden is brilliant for dogs and children and the little bridge to the island (accessed via a gate from the main garden) was fun to explore. Some nice eateries nearby and overall a perfect base to explore the forest, Symonds Yat and the River Wye. We would definitely love to revisit.
- Amy, August 2024Thankyou so much for your lovely comments, were so glad you all enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

Amanda “Excellent stay, comfy and clean accommodation.”
Great area to explore. Grounds are brilliant for children and dogs and well maintained. Would have appreciated update on change of bath to P shape, access space was tight and this made it a little difficult to get in as the party was made up of two less mobile people.
- Amanda, July 2024So glad you enjoyed your stay, and thankyou for your lovely comments. Also for your comment regarding the bathroom bath/shower. The bathroom has been refurbished since the initial photographs, so I will update the photos with Sykes Property Owner

Kirstie “Lovely, very well equipped little cottage with spacious grounds for children or dogs.”
Very comfortable beds. Great position for a base to explore the local area. Within walking distance of Goodrich Castle and a short distance to Ross on Wye, Monmouth etc. Very friendly local pub 1/2 a mile away which serves good food and is dog friendly. Owners left us alone all week but we knew we could contact them if needed. Couldn't have asked for more.
- Kirstie, November 2023 -
Sarah “Lovely property for a short break.”
Well equipped and luxurious for two people. In a lovely setting. Bedrooms and dining area would be cramped for four people.
- Sarah, November 2023 -

It has all the facilities and things you could need. Fab walks straight from the door. Very dog friendly. The owners are friendly, welcoming and on hand for any questions but also give you plenty of space to do your thing.

Karen “Had a lovely week.”
Cottage very comfy. Kitchen well equipped. Beds very comfy. Not far from lots of walks with dogs. Plenty of space outside for dog. Lovely food at the local pub. Just don’t use the local footpath as the are not looked after and blocked.
- Karen, August 2023 -
Antony “Well equipped kitchen.”
Comfortable sofas and beds. Well maintained, extremely large garden areas with lovely area around the cottage.
- Antony, July 2023 -
Paul “A very comfortable and well equipped cottage in ideal surroundings and in a beautiful part of the UK.”
It is very dog friendly with a huge fenced area. The owners are friendly and helpful, but are careful not to be intrusive. We had a very enjoyable stay.
- Paul, June 2023 -
Ann “Had a lovely week in this very comfortable cottage.”
Great outside space for the dogs.
- Ann, June 2023 -
Clare “Lovely cottage in a fabulous location.”
We particularly enjoyed being near water and was lucky enough to see a kingfisher! The cottage was well equipped although maybe a little bit small for 4 adults and dog (who had a great time in the large field). We made good use of the sun loungers and the selection of board games. Would definitely return.
- Clare, June 2023 -
Wendy “Fabulous cottage well set out and lots of home comforts.”
Fabulous spacious garden for the dogs to run around and secure. We had a great holiday thank you Jane for letting us stay in your lovely cottage.
- Wendy, May 2023 -
Ann “The toilet seat was loose.”
The stable door needs to be weather proofed before the winter. Otherwise a very comfortable cottage in beautiful countryside.
- Ann, May 2023 -
Norman “We arrived on Friday late afternoon and owner popped in to see if we ok then said she had to go and sort her mum.”
We then had there son on a lawn mower cutting grass for ages. Then on Saturday their son and friend revving up their motorbikes , finally on Sunday husband using a drummer for hours, not the quiet holiday we were hoping for. At no time did they come round and say are you out as we need to do these jobs but thought that they could have been done when we were out . The bed was very comfortable and had a good night sleep. The house did need a few jobs done on it but it was comfortable. You can get to many places from where it is situated.
- Norman, May 2023 -
Sean “Lovely comfòrtable accomodation in an ideal location.”
- Sean, April 2023 -
Mark “Beautiful cottage situated in grounds of the owner, however this did not interrupt our stay.”
The owners were on hand if needed but otherwise left us to it. We did however get a lovely greeting from Millie, the owners dog, most evenings to play ball. We stayed with our dog who had use of 2 fields throughout the stay. The cottage had all the amenities you could want and was lovely and clean. There is a local pub within easy walking distance, we had a drink there but didn't eat, although the food did look good. The cottage is ideally situated for visiting The Forest of Dean (yes we did see wild boar), Symonds Yat, and the Wye valley as a whole. All in all a fantastic cottage for a break away.
- Mark, March 2023 -
Linda “We had a wonderful stay and perfect for our 2 dogs.”
- Linda, March 2023 -
Seb “Thank you for providing an outstanding place to stay in a fantastic setting within such easy reach of the A40 but not suffering any noise from it, meaning we could do all of the things we wanted in the Forest of Dean whilst still staying in a lovely quiet spot.”
Having the dog with us the outside space was invaluable for him.
- Seb, March 2023 -
David “Only real feedback is that the stables is listed as dog freindly but on arrival there is a request to keep dogs from going upstairs, but as the house is open plan and there is no door or stair gate to the upper floor this was very hard to do.”
Renters need to be aware that they need to take a pen or cage for the dog. Apart from that the Stables is a very comfortable retreat. Well appointed and extremely comfortable. A beautiful setting and we even managed a Kingfisher sighting on our walks.
- David, February 2023 -
Kayleigh “Lovely stay, great location and the house was really well equipped and clean.”
- Kayleigh, January 2023 -
Mandy “Sheets had marks on , no heating on arrival or next day this should have been done before we arrived!”
Utensils dirty and water pressure poor looked like it hadn't been cleaned. Dead fly and cobwebs and towels that are like sandpaper definitely not worth staying here plus description (on owners grounds ) very vague I wanted to be away from other people and found out that the owner lives right on the doorstep so left earlier than planned never again disgusting.
- Mandy, December 2022I was anticipating a very poor review after I sent video's to Sykes to show the water pressure and heating were working as they should, and I wouldn't issue a refund. We were actually away skiing for Christmas so were only at home for the first day of the guests stay. The cottage was beautifully decorated for Christmas including a tree, fizz and added treats. I have been using Sykes since 2012 and my overall score from customer feedback is 92/100. I think anybody would agree that I wouldn't get a score like that if The Stable was dirty and I provided stained sheets. Property Owner

Mark “Second time at the stables owners lovely location great we will be back still load’s to explore Mark and Di”
- Mark, December 2022 -
Eleanor “Had to buy water as the water has limescale.”
This upset my stomach and gave me and my friend acid reflux. The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay very much.
- Eleanor, November 2022 -
Lisa “Lovely cottage, not far from the shops.”
Great for dogs, really dog friendly Would thoroughly recommend
- Lisa, October 2022 -
Jayne “Beautiful location, and easy access to the activities available in the Forest of Dean.”
The cottage was well equipped, clean and comfortable during our stay along with the bonus of a secure paddock which my two spaniels really enjoyed running around in. Thank you for a lovely weekend.
- Jayne, October 2022 -
Julie “A charming cosy cottage with ample parking space.”
We received a warm welcome from the owner upon our arrival. Great location with nice rural walks from the property. Lovely to sit on the bench & watch the little river flowing by. A well appointed kitchen with all essentials provided such as biscuits, tea bags, coffee, dishwasher tablets/washing up liquid etc. Plenty of place to eat our locally. Some information leaflets on nearby tourist attractions wouldn't go amiss (such as Goodrich castle, Wye Valley kayaking & butterfly zoo, all less than mins drive away). We hope to return in the future. Thank you.
- Julie, October 2022 -
Peter “Excellent base for exploring the local area plenty to see and do within a short distance.”

- Margaret, June 2022 -
David “2nd time we have been, we love the secure garden for the dogs and the area.”
Thanks again to the owners for being so friendly and discreetly attentive.
- David, May 2022 -
Brian “The only real criticism we have is that the garden was classified as secure which it was not.”
Having a dog we had to be mindful of her safety. There was three accesses into the large garden and they were continually being left open by other people. Therefore not secure and not solely for us as we had car parked there one day. The cottage itself was ok and the facilities good. One constructive opinion would be that both beds were too large for small bedrooms. Normal doubles would have sufficed,
- Brian, May 2022 -
Andrew “Thank you for a lovely stay in your cottage.”
It felt like a real home from home (the welcome biscuits were greatly appreciated), and Lexi loved the garden area to run in and the river for her swim. We had a very relaxing week away with so many beautiful walks and hope to come back in the future.
- Andrew, April 2022 -
Pete “Lovely place to stay.”
Quiet and in the country. Lots of bird life around. We found it very comfortable and really enjoyed our stay.
- Pete, March 2022 -
Gill “Attractive cottage in fantastic surrounding Extremely friendly helpful owners Everything that you need.”
- Gill, February 2022 -
Emma “The outside space was very generous and lovely.”
The actual cottage felt too small for 4 people and a dog. The bathroom was poor and shower really bad.
- Emma, February 2022 -
Claire “Beautiful spot so close to Symonds Yat”
- Claire, February 2022 -
Carla “Lovely well equipped and maintained cottage in a beautiful setting with lots to do for humans and dogs alike.”
Will definitely return.
- Carla, December 2021 -
Martin “Attractive comfortable cosy detached character cottage on land adjacent to owner's property.”
Excellent wi-fi, kitchen well equipped, very large comfortable beds, two good comfortable sofas. Excellent and easy to control CH. Bathroom shower has weak flow - bathroom otherwise excellent. The cottage is close to a river weir which was in full flow during our stay. Plenty of space for parking next to cottage. Communication with owner was very good.
- Martin, December 2021 -
Norman “The cottage was excellent.”
The owner was very present and helpful
- Norman, November 2021 -
Robert “Fabulous cottage in beautiful location, very private with great access to the amenities which was brilliant for the security of our two dogs.”
The owners were really nice and kept out of the way but were handy if needed, cottage well appointed to which satisfied everything we needed. Great to tour the local area and venture into Wales, Ross-on-Wye fabulous as well as sleepy Ledbury. Would definitely stay at this cottage again. Robert & Freda
- Robert, September 2021 -
Mike “Comfortable and well-furnished cottage in ideal position for visiting all the Wye Valley attractions.”
Only one minor criticism - there was no hairdryer provided.
- Mike, August 2021 -
Alistair “We received a warm welcome and some freshly laid eggs for breakfast.”
The facilities were excellent and the huge secure garden delightful. Great for our two dogs.
- Alistair, July 2021 -
Michael “This well equipped cottage in a stunning location has everything you will need.”
We loved the sound of the water over the weir. There is a huge area of lawn, and access to another rough paddock that our whippet liked exploring. Doggy heaven. He also made friends with the owners lovely Lab, Millie. She is allowed into the garden via a gate if you want to play with her. The owners are a hard working family, and give you privacy, but are willing to have a friendly chat. You are only 10 minutes from Monmouth and under ten from Ross on Wye. We were blessed with fabulous weather, and after waiting two years, went home rested and refreshed. It was perfect.
- Michael, June 2021 -
David “It was perfect & we hope to return soon.”
- David, May 2021 -
Mark “Really good location loads to do owners really friendly , dogs had a great time ...”
Really good location loads to do owners really friendly , dogs had a great time we will be back Mark Diana snowy and brook
- Mark, May 2021 -
Tina “Peaceful and beautiful spot on the river.”
Garden enclosed but we had to keep closing the gate to stop our dogs from roaming further. The river is closed off from the enclosed garden but can be easily accessed to enjoy time on the little island. The rain let us down, nothing can be done about that...We had a lovely break., just what was needed.
- Tina, May 2021 -
Norman “Lovely situation, good parking, tasteful furnishings, helpful friendly hosts.”
Highly recommended.
- Norman, May 2021 -
Judi “A well equipped cottage, in a lovely area, many lovely walks nearby.”

John “The cottage we stayed at was like a home from home.”
The hosts provided everything we needed and were extremely friendly, but also granting us our privacy. It is in a lovely loation and I would certainly go back again and feel happy to recommend it to friends.
- John, September 2020 -
Mike “The cottage was very well equipped, the furnishings and beds very comfortable.”
The friendly owner left us eggs and biscuits on arrival and popped in to make sure everything was ok. The setting was perfect, very quiet yet located such that we had quick access to travel routes in all directions. We stayed for one week but could easily have found enough things to do to fill a fortnight.
- Mike, August 2020 -
Louise “This is our second time staying in this lovely cottage.”
It's clean, comfortable and offers everything you need, especially the big area for your dog to run about and enjoy themselves. Great facilities and close to lots of lovely places to visit especially the Forest of Dean. Based not too far from the Welsh border so it's a nice drive to the Brecon Beacons and other surrounding areas. Really is a good base for exploring. Hopefully we'll be back for more exploring next year.
- Louise, August 2020 -
John “Owners extremely friendly and very helpful”
- John, March 2020 -
Alun “Good base for exploring Herefordshire and Monmouthshire with a number of places to explore withing 30-40min drive.”
We had a problem with the kettle, contacted the owner and she brought her own kettle around while she obtained another, brilliant.
- Alun, September 2019 -
Andrew “A really nice cottage with very good facilities, in a handy position.”
...... The cottage grounds, the actual cottage and the facilities were great. The cottage is a good size (2 bed) and in a handy location to get out and about. It's peaceful and secure in a small quiet village location and is just a nice area to go for gentle walks. The owner was very pleasant and helpful and the cottage is situated in a good location for nearby Ross-on-Wye, Monmouth and Hereford as well as the motorway to go further afield to places like Gloucester. All of these are worth a visit. Also, Symmonds Yat viewpoint is nearby which is spectacular. For families with children, it's a short drive to Coleford to visit Beechenhurst (walking trails, kids play park, large cafe, climbing / highwire facilities, cycling tracks), Symmonds Yat for river cruises, Cannop ponds for wooded lake side walks, and the Dean Heritage Centre which has outside space, a museum and regular craft type events in the village of Lower Soudley. *The listing advertises fishing on site, but this is not accurate and the listing really needs changing. The listing says to speak with the owner to arrange fishing from their land, into Garron Brook, but this wasn't actually an option. I spoke with her and she advised fishing elsewhere and provided contact details of a local fly fishing club. The owner did not provide an option of fishing on their land at all. This is not what I expected and was disappointing. The town stretch of the river Wye in Ross-on-Wye can be fished on a day ticket scheme, with tickets purchased from the tackle shop on Ross-on-Wye High Street. However, it's busy (as you'd imagine) with canoeists, swimmers, dogs etc. Also, the bank is very steep in most places so there are only a handful of accessible swims. It certainly looks a great spot to wet a line though, so worth considering. Overall this was another lovely family holiday away in this part of the UK. Well worth a visit.
- Andrew, August 2019 -
David “Holiday was good, clean and comfortable cottage, great location.”
Dissapointed with fishing on site, almost impossible, local pub had closed down so nothing within walking distance. Shower was very tempremental running hot then cold, apart from that overall was good.
- David, August 2019 -
Melvyn “Very peaceful & quiet location.”
Very pleased with the accommodation, and hard to be critical of anything. Perhaps some brief notes on use of some facilities, e.g. operation of the hob elements, & how to empty the vacuum cleaner (it was full), might have been appropriate. Maybe there were such notes available, but we missed them. Otherwise, excellent week's holiday.
- Melvyn, April 2019 -
Robert “The person who took my on line call and helped me find somewhere was very good.”
We'd been let down elsewhere at the last minute and I was panicking a bit. The cottage was small but cosy and lived up to expectations. The bottle of wine on arrival was much appreciated. And the effort put into the Christmas tree was also appreciated. We had a lovely time there and wouldn't hesitate to book again.
- Robert, December 2018 -
Ann “Lovely cottage set in a lovely location.”
- Ann, October 2018 -
Bernadette “This cottage is in a lovely setting with lots of land available for you to use.”
The cottage itself is comfortable but in need of a little TLC and some extra cleaning. Windows were very dirty especially the patio doors and lots of cobwebs most notable in the bedrooms. However we had a lovely stay and would recommend it especially if you had a dog.
- Bernadette, September 2018Thank you very much for your comments. I am really sorry to ready that you felt my cottage needs TLC, I take great care that my guests will have a lovely time in my cottage. I have a window cleaner that cleans the windows every 6 weeks I will definitely discuss your comments with the window cleaner and I have already spoken to my cleaner, who cleans my property since last 1 year (we never had this issue before). I assure you that this will not happen again. Thank you very much for all the positive comments as well. Property Owner

Klaas “We had a very good week in this place.”
The cottage is quite cosy downstairs, the beds are comfortable. It was a very warm week but we managed to keep the cottage sufficiently cool and we enjoyed having a garden at our disposition. For four adults the cottage would be a little tiny (e.g. the dining table is not so large) but for a family it was just right and the only thing we would recommend is to slightly expand the number of cups, cutlery etc. But the dishwasher was quick and quiet so this is a minor point. The owners live next to the cottage and are helpful but do not intrude. What we especially liked here is the area the cottage was situated in, which absolutely exceeded our expectations. We were planning to use the place mainly as a base to go to the Brecon Beacons, but actually we almost only stayed in the area which is at the same time very pretty, quite laid back seeming a bit overlooked by the mainstream, yet full of things to do; we walked in the beautiful and varied scenery (meandering rivers/towering cliffs/wild forests/good pubs), went cycling, canoeing and all of that within very easy reach of the cottage. When we left we concluded we could have easily stayed another week.
- Klaas, July 2018Thank you very much for your beautiful comments I appreciate the time you have taken to put this on. After your above comments I have made necessary changes and have replaced all soft furnishing. Also would like to inform my future guests that my dinning table is extendable but I do understand now that I need to put a note in the welcome file to aware my guests. Thank you once again for your lovely comments. You are always welcome to my cottage. Property Owner

Danielle “We had a fantastic week at The Stable which was in a beautiful location that was perfect for the whole family - dogs & kids alike.”
The cottage was very well equipped and we didn’t want for anything. I requested the high chair and travel cot in advance which were clean and ready to go when we arrived. I would 100% stay here again.
- Danielle, April 2018 -
Carol “Absolutely lovely!”
Surrounded by green countryside and all we could hear was birdsong and the water passing through the mill. A fabulous place to chill out and enjoy some peace and quiet. We will definitely stay at this property again. The Cross keys Pub around the corner was lovely too - friendly owners and good honest pub food. Loved every minute - thanks!

- Frances, June 2014 -

Clare “We liked the layout of the property and it was very homely and warm.”
We had a dog, who was able to run out in the field of the property which was well fenced off and no danger of him getting out on the lane, he was in his element. There were a number of walks from the property and Goodrich was very local with the historic castle, good walks along the River Wye and Coppett Hill and a lovely pub or two close by! The owner was very hospitable and welcoming.
