The property

Lavender Cottage is a charming double-fronted retreat, set in the lively market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, in the heart of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It’s a superb choice for families or groups of friends looking to unwind and enjoy all that this characterful town has to offer. Step inside to find the beautifully styled sitting room, where a tasteful blend of traditional and contemporary elements creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Striking colours and thoughtfully chosen furnishings give this space real personality.

Settle in for a relaxing evening with your favourite tipple by the woodburning stove, or pick out a book for a quiet read. The sociable kitchen/diner is well-equipped for preparing delicious meals, with striking skylights that flood the space with natural light and underfloor heating to keep things toasty underfoot.

Bi-fold doors lead out to a split-level garden, neatly enclosed and edged with shrubs, fragrant potted plants, dwarf olive trees and a graceful cherry tree.

Enjoy meals outdoors at the glass-topped rattan table, or head up to the upper tier where a smart bench awaits.

A side gate offers direct access to a nearby alleyway and the main road beyond. Also on the ground floor is a practical cloakroom that doubles as a utility area – perfect for stashing coats and boots or freshening up after a countryside walk. Climb to the first floor to find two comfortable bedrooms and a sleek shower room.

One is a bright double room; the other a twin featuring an ornamental fireplace.

The shower room is fresh and inviting, complete with a walk-in shower that’s perfect after a long day. The second floor is home to the main bedroom – a generous dual-aspect space with exposed wooden beams and a king-size bed.

This floor also has its own bathroom, giving you the chance to enjoy a peaceful soak in the tub with a well-earned drink in hand. After a refreshing night’s sleep, head to the kitchen for breakfast and gear up for another day of exploring. Just a stone’s throw away is the town’s historic market square – the bustling centre of local life – home to independent shops, traditional pubs, cafés and restaurants.

On the second Thursday of each month, the farmers’ market rolls into town with a tempting spread of local produce.

Stay close and visit the Fosse Gallery to browse contemporary British art, pop into The Stag at Stow for food and drinks, or indulge in tea and cake at The Old Bakery Tea Room. Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the highest towns in the Cotswolds, is surrounded by glorious countryside and offers excellent walking and cycling routes, including the Gloucestershire Way – a 94-mile trail that winds through the region’s prettiest villages. Further afield, why not visit Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens, book a guided tour with Undiscovered Cotswolds, or explore the area with Cotswold Walks or Hikes & Bikes – all just a short drive from the cottage. Gather your loved ones and enjoy a memorable stay at Lavender Cottage – a delightful base for discovering Stow-on-the-Wold and the wider Cotswolds.

About the location

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD

Bourton-on-the-Water 4 miles; Stratford upon Avon 15 miles.

The highest town in the Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold, originally an Iron Age Fort, epitomises olde worlde England. This ancient market town has played host to many fairs since the 12th century and today holds a biannual Gypsy Horse Fair, craft fairs and monthly Farmers' market. The vast market square boasts an ancient cross at one end and the village stocks at the other, surrounded by an elegant array of Cotswold stone townhouses, antique shops, tea rooms, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants and its very own cricket museum. Many walks and cycle rides through the beautiful rolling countryside of the Cotswolds can be enjoyed from the centre of Stow, with the Macmillan Way, Heart of England Way, Gloucestershire and Monarch's Way all running close to the town. Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' as the River Windrush runs through the centre, lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is one of the most popular Cotswold villages. The Saxon market town of Moreton-in-Marsh and the quintessential English village of Broadway are all within easy reach and make a great day out. Cheltenham (20 miles away) is, architecturally, the most complete regency town in England. A spa town with an incredible range of shops, cinemas, theatres, restaurants and pubs, it is famous for its horse-racing festival in March, culminating in the Gold Cup steeplechase. At other times of year, it is host to literature, jazz, classical music, science and food and drink festivals. Oxford, the oldest university city in England and sometimes called 'The City of Dreaming Spires’ has an abundance of prestigious attractions, including the 38 colleges of the university (half of which date back before 1600), the oldest university teaching room, the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums, and Botanic Gardens. Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Worcester and the waterfront city of Gloucester are also within easy reach, making Stow-on-the-Wold an ideal base.
