Read on for the Manor Cottages guide.

What Are the Five Valleys?

The Five Valleys are a series of picturesque valleys radiating from Stroud, each with its own unique character. Historically, these valleys were central to the woollen cloth industry, and today they offer a blend of rolling countryside, charming villages, and historic mills.

The Five Valleys are:

  1. Slad Valley

  2. Painswick Valley

  3. Tyley Valley (Tyley Bottom)

  4. Nailsworth Valley

  5. Chalford/Golden Valley

Let’s explore them one by one.

1. Slad Valley: Laurie Lee’s Inspiration

Famous for being the childhood home of poet and author Laurie Lee, Slad Valley is an unspoiled haven of wildflower meadows, ancient woodlands, and babbling streams. Lee’s beloved book “Cider with Rosie” paints a vivid picture of life in this valley. Don’t miss The Woolpack Inn, a quintessential country pub with connections to Lee himself.

Perfect for: Literary walks, birdwatching, and peaceful strolls.

2. Painswick Valley: The Queen of the Cotswolds

Painswick Valley leads to the beautiful village of Painswick, often called the “Queen of the Cotswolds”. With its honey-coloured stone cottages, narrow lanes, and the iconic St. Mary’s Church with its 99 yew trees, this valley is postcard-perfect.

Perfect for: Historic architecture lovers and for garden enthusiasts – visit Painswick Rococo Garden.

3. Tyley Valley: A Hidden Gem

Also known as Tyley Bottom, this is the least known of the Five Valleys, making it a perfect spot for those seeking tranquility. Its secluded setting is dotted with old mills and lush greenery, ideal for quiet walks and discovering wildlife.

Perfect for: Off-the-beaten-track explorers, photographers.

4. Nailsworth Valley: Artisan Culture & Nature

Nailsworth Valley is home to the bustling town of Nailsworth, a hub for independent shops, artisan bakeries, and organic cafes. The valley itself offers beautiful walking routes, connecting you to woodlands and old mill sites.

Perfect for: Foodies, shoppers, and scenic country walks.

5. Chalford & The Golden Valley: Industrial Heritage & Beauty

Chalford and the Golden Valley are rich with textile history. Once a thriving centre of wool production, today it’s a peaceful valley lined with mills, canals, and historic cottages clinging to the hillsides. The Thames & Severn Canal towpath offers a gentle, scenic walk.

Perfect for: Heritage walks, canal side strolls, and exploring charming hamlets.

Why Visit the Five Valleys?

The Five Valleys of Stroud offer a quintessential Cotswold experience: rolling hills, rich heritage, and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re walking in Laurie Lee’s footsteps, exploring artisan markets, or simply soaking up the views, Stroud’s Five Valleys are a must-visit destination.
