Map & Local Information

Little Somerford is a typical Cotswolds' village located about 3 miles to the east of Malmesbury. The village is quite small and surrounded by countryside and forms half of 'The Somerfords' which also includes Great Somerford - which is about a mile away. There is a sweet country pub around the corner from the cottage The Somerford Arms, which serves food and good ales etc. There is also a second pub plus a shop down the road from the cottage in Great Somerford.

History awaits in Malmesbury, which is the oldest borough in England! In our view the market town is very much off the beaten track for Cotswolds' places to stay and visit, mainly because it sits in a more rural location (compared to the likes of Burford, Broadway etc). The town is quite small, but relatively untouched and yet there is a wide selection of cafes, shops and restaurants as well as other amenities. Perhaps most striking is the magnificent 800 year old Norman Abbey built for the Benedictine Monastery which was founded in the 7th Century, also the lovely Market Cross. During your stay you must certainly visit the famous Abbey House Gardens that have been featured on television, and then take a stroll along the 'river walk'.

Set on a hill, circled by the river Avon, the imposing Norman Abbey dominates the skyline. The town flourished as a weaving centre from the 15th century and became known for its fine silk and lace. The fine 15th century Market Cross, an Old Courtroom, narrow medieval streets and a river walk, show hints of a rich history dating back a thousand years.

Tetbury is always a popular trip, and is no more than about 15 mins drive up the road - famous for its antique shops and very good selection of pubs and restaurants too. Prince Charles' shop 'Highgrove' is here too, but do bring plenty of money as you will probably need it!!! About 10 mins away is the Westonbirt Arboretum - and absolutely worth a visit if you love to walk.

Bath, which is always worth a visit, is about 30 mins drive away where you will be able to fill your time very easily!

The area is rural, and traditional in equal measure and an area of the Cotswolds that often gets overlooked and yet we have no idea why!!
