Slad, Cirencester & surrounding area
Laurie's Barn is an extraordinary old hunting lodge set deep in the beautiful Slad Valley - one of the most picturesque areas of the Cotswolds'. As the name suggests, the farm and location retain close links with Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie novel, which was set on the land surrounding the farm, (and not only that Lee's local pub The Woolpack is just up/down the road too). A very quirky barn, this beauty has outstanding, breathtaking views overlooking the rolling countryside, stretching into the distance. Inside the barn is enormous, set across three levels, with a large seating area downstairs, including a wood burning stove, and TV for cosy viewing, while upstairs on the second floor is an enormous open plan area with kitchen, a second living area with a second log burner, plus a vast viewing window offering the jaw-dropping views. The vaulted ceiling has a second bedroom that's spectacular and magical, complete with original oak beams and trusses. This is a one-off holiday spot, a true rural retreat set in the grounds of a magnificent Manor house, enjoying some of the region's most attractive countryside.

Laurie's Barn is located just outside Slad, a small village deep in the southern Cotswolds an area often felt to be the most attractive part of the entire Cotswolds' region. It is about two miles from the working town of Stroud and similarly from the picture postcard town (big village actually!) of Painswick. The village/town of Painswick is simply divine and totally charming with a variety of shops to browse. The Painswick Hotel is worth an afternoon tea or more!
Slad is perhaps most famous for being the home (and final resting place) of Laurie Lee, who based his book Cider with Rosie on his own life in the village and the surrounding countryside. The village lies in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, and is built principally on the B4070 road from Stroud to Birdlip, which is halfway up one side of Slad Valley. The Slad Brook runs along the bottom of the valley.
There is a small parish church in the village, and a small traditional pub, the Woolpack, where we would heartily recommend a visit and a drink! There is also the Builder's Arms at Sheepscombe which similarly worth a trip - it's about 10 mins walk away.
Although you are in the southern Cotswold hills, you are very convenient for Cheltenham and Cirencester plus more of the Cotswold's delightful villages. As you would expect, there are many places to visit near by including Painswick Rococo Gardens (3 miles), Prinknash Abbey (4miles) and Westonbirt Arboretum (15miles) all of which are worthe a trip.
"What a gem. Feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, but only a short walk over fields & you get a fab welcome from the local, the Woolpack with lovely food & atmosphere. We sat out every afternoon on the sunbeds on the patio that was definitely a suncatcher & was totally sheltered from the wind and then had a gorgeous fire indoors in the evenings. Loads of places to walk & lots of info given by the owners, who only live next door. Smith, July 2016"Smith 2016-07-28
"Catherine - you have truly found your calling. This place and your loving hospitality around it is second to none. You have thought of every detail and every comfort."Mr S. 2016-12-02
