Carswell, Burford & surrounding area
Starlight Cottage is a rather swish country bolt hole that you see in the movies, nestling in a small hamlet amongst unspoilt countryside. A true gem this sweet cottage has been completely renovated by the current owners, right down to digging the floor out to add toasty underfloor heating! Inside it is light and welcoming, each room flooded with natural sunlight and furnished in a smart style; the kitchen is top-notch and very well equipped and living room cosy with a wood burning stove. Upstairs is a good sized bedroom with king size bed and stylish bathroom. There's a wonderful attention to detail throughout and we really enjoyed our visit here. Pack your wellies so that you can explore the lovely countryside, in fact you can march across the fields to two terrific country pubs which both serve excellent food and a wide selection of local ales - The Lamb at Buckland and The Trout at Tadpole Bridge. You can also follow the many footpaths to The Thames and admire the local lock. A picture postcard location and proper cottage home.

Starlight Cottage is situated in a small hamlet of about 8 houses. It really is a proper rural retreat! Surrounding you are fields and open countryside and your only contact with the outside world is likely to be the postman, the neighbours on their way to work or the local wildlife - it's so peaceful and very heavenly.
For Downton Abbey followers, you will be delighted to know that Bampton where the outdoor village and church scenes were filmed is just 5 minutes down the road. Bampton itself has lots of Cotswolds' charm and has some pubs and basic amenities. It's on the way to Burford, so you can't miss it.
The nearest 'village' is Buckland where there is a local pub. You can walk there (map in the cottage) across the fields it is about 1 to 1.5 miles away. Otherwise you can drive there in about 5 mins. (we've not visited this pub so can't pass comment!) Beyond here is the market town of Faringdon, which is in southern Oxfordshire and an attractive, bustling little place. It has all of the main shops such as large supermarkets and other more artisan shops too, there is a wide selection of good restaurants and pubs also. It even has a tapas bar (La Bobina - highly recommended, but please note that bookings are essential)!
If walking is your thing, then approx 5 miles south of the cottage you will find the Ridgeway -often described as Britain's oldest road, the Ridgeway follows ancient tracks and paths previously walked by herdsman and soldiers as long as 5000 years ago. You will find evidence of its history at both Uffington Castle (sadly now little more than a raised bank) and Wayland's Smithy (an ancient buriel ground).
To the north you can enjoy walks along the Thames, and perhaps take in William Morris's former home at Kelmscott Manor. A little further afield you can be in Oxford in 20 - 25 minutes, or if you head in the opposite direction be at the McArthur Glen Outlet Village in Swindon in about the same time.
If you have the time, then you can be at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock in 30 - 40 minutes - absolutely stunning.
