Upper Slaughter is considered by some as one of THE finest villages in the Cotswolds. When you visit, you can see why so many are utterly charmed by its beauty and timeless appeal - a place where you can imagine everything precisely the same as 100 years ago (or more) just smart cars and a very smart resturant instead!
It is an absolutely classic Cotswold village located on the banks of the River Eye, which also flows through the village down to Lower Slaughter - itself a stunning village with one of the most photographed elements of the Cotswolds- The Old Mill. (This was once a water mill with an undershot waterwheel and a chimney for additional steam power.) The name 'Upper Slaughter' comes from the 'Olde English' name for a wet land 'slothre' (muddy place) which is reference to the land that the village sits on. It is particularly known for it's unspoilt limestone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.
From the front door of Jasmine Cottage is a short stroll across the lane to The Lords of the Manor a superb restaurant / hotel where you can enjoy a drink or meal. Beyond this, there are some similar places to go to in Lower Slaughter, or the surrounding villages. The Plough in nearby Cold Aston is very good - alternatively Stow on the Wold has many options to both shop or relax (if shopping isn;'t relaxing!!!)
The village is very convenient for Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold each within a few miles. Slightly further afield are the popular market towns of Burford and Chipping Campden but within easy driving distance.
The village is as good as it gets (in our opinion!!) in terms of Cotswolds' classics.
