Bourton on the Water is probably the most popular (and famous) village in the Cotswolds, and often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" because the River Windrush runs right through the centre and has a number of bridges criss crossing it. The combination of this clear sparkling water and the attractive low bridges create a charming scene, best enjoyed in the quieter times of day and quieter months of the year when you'll probably have the place to yourself. Surrounding the village is an unspoilt countryside with a host of great walks to choose from.
Within Bourton there are a variety of amenities, including a basic supermarket along with various pubs, shops and some sweet attractions to help pass the time. Along with the river and bridges, there is an abundance of traditional architecture to be found within the village, some of it quite spectacular. Whenever we visit Bourton we always recommend a short trip to Upper and Lower Slaughter which are timeless in their appeal - potentially the most attractive villages in the whole of the Cotswolds, additionally we recommend Stow on the Wold (all within 5 miles). Burford is 10 miles away with Cheltenham, Cirencester and Oxford all within easy reach.
There are many attractions in the village, suitable for visitors of all ages. The Model Village is a mini replica of the village itself, Birdland Park and Gardens offers woodland, river and gardens inhabited by over 500 birds, and the Cotswold Perfumery is a sensory experience with a difference!
