“Wonderful place to stay.”

Very dog friendly. So peaceful, other than a bit of tractors (it is the countryside) you are away from everything. We have stayed several times and love it at Point Cottage. The level of cleanliness is top notch, even all utensils and plates etc are spotless every time we stay. (This is something other places overlook )would highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, out of the way,countryside, dog friendly place to stay.

Its situation was perfect for us, lots of beautiful walks in the vicinity. The cottage itself is full of character and comfortable. We had absolutely no issues with the property and would stay there again. The local pub just down the road is extremely welcoming and offers good food and excellent service.

“Perfect choice for us - a couple with 2 dogs.”

Property very attractive on edge of village. Accommodation comfortable, very clean and tidy with very well stocked kitchen for the cook (large freezer in outbuilding). Plenty of useful items to be found in cupboards in dining room. Wifi initially not working. Easily sorted when we found plug and wire next to head of single bed had been knocked and needed to be pushed in. Large outdoor space with secure perimeter ensured dogs were safe. Picnic table in sunny spot. Flagstone and tiled floors downstairs meant wet paws and hairs could be cleaned away easily. Narrow road into village stopped us walking to the pub. Wonderful scenery all around. We were surprised to see hardly any people or horses use the bridleway which passes next to the cottage,

“As two adults with two Labradors we were very comfortable and enjoyed very much our stay at Point Cottage.”

The kitchen facilities were perfectly adequate with sufficient resources. The dining room and lounge are similarly comfortable with the lounge seating particularly so. The main bedroom was perfect, however the second bedroom was quite small and would not offer sufficient room for two adults. The stairs are quite steep with winder steps at the top which would be difficult to negotiate for the elderly or infirm. If the bathroom is required during the nighttime, the downstairs excursion could be eventful. The bathroom could do with an update. When all said and done, we were happy with what Point Cottage provided for a very reasonable cost at a good location for visiting the county or further afield. had a very enjoyable stay.

The property is exceptionally clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for our week’s stay. We loved waking up to the sound of the chattering nesting housemartins, rabbit spotting on walks along the bridleway by the orchards, relaxed afternoons in the lovely garden and the fabulous food and warm welcome we received from Phil and the staff at the Yew Tree. Thank you to the owner for making access/key collection so simple. We would love to stay here again. In fact we would live here forever if we could! Thank you.

“Point Cottage is the perfect dog friendly cottage for us!”

Situated right on a bridle way with beautiful views and lovely walks all around, this cosy cottage has everything required for a peaceful break. Our dogs absolutely loved the enclosed garden and countryside. The central heating is excellent if needed. Sitting at the picnic table enjoying a coffee in the morning sunshine listening to the birds and tractors was heaven. Thank you for sharing your lovely cottage with us.

“Absolutely loved the cottage and the dogs loved the secure garden.”

I really think a shower mat would be advisable as the water is lovely and soft but the bath is really slippery. Also a pint of milk would be helpful as if people are having a tesco delivery like we did our shop was early evening and we would have loved a cuppa when we arrived at 3pm.

“Cottage was lovely, very homely, warm, clean and tidy, set in a tranquil area, garden was huge and well maintained.”

The owner was on hand to answer any questions and was very helpful and accommodating. Had everything one could wish for in a holiday home. Only negative from us is that the cottage sits next to a public footpath/bridal way which was not mentioned in the details, therefore lots of people walking past etc, we found this intrusive as we couldn’t sit in the garden without someone walking by on a daily basis, a fence could be erected around the low wall of the cottage for extra privacy. One family decided to sit on the wall to have their lunch!!

“We didn’t want to leave this beautiful holiday haven!”

It is just a perfect location for total peace and quiet and absolutely ideal for dog owners. What more could you want but being situated on a bridleway plus a secure garden. Despite the rest of the country suffering with ‘summer rain’, we only had one shower when in Hay on Wye (well worth a visit). We visited Moccas Park Nature Trail - a great walking find, plus Sugwas Pool, Credenhill Country Park, Hergest Ridge (breathtaking) and the beautiful Hergest Croft, Brobury plus the Weir Gardens. We recommend Timothy and Birch at Bridge Sollers for wonderful cakes plus lunches. So many dog friendly places and so we will be booking again and looking forward to next year. We loved hearing the birds just outside the cottage which is well equipped and very cosy! Thank you!

“Point Cottage is a small, quaint cottage.”

It is well furnished and has all the items required for a weeks stay. The beds are comfortable and the property is clean. Two pluses for us are the large self contained garden ideal for our two dogs to run around and sit out, the other is the very large shed which was ideal for our bikes, bike carrier ad walking boots. There are plenty of places to visit and walk. The local pub the Yew Tree is fantastic, serves good beers and really nice food.

Warm, good Wi-Fi lovely newish settee and a great garden for Nero. The draw back being the stairs steep with a tight narrow turn at the top. The cottage is down a few miles of narrow country lanes and unfortunately these were flooded at the time of our arrival. A warning would have been nice as we were travelling from a drier location. The photos seem to be old and the living room is really much nicer now. Also add photos of bathroom and bedroom to enhance the place. The flies were back but spray seemed to sort them out. We would not return because we are getting old and creaky but would recommend it as a good place to stay. Lots of interesting places to visit too.

It is comfortable and well equipped. The large shed was a bonus for storing fishing tackle. It's well positioned for walking, fishing and drives to many interesting places. The nearby Yew Tree Inn served good food and drink for when we didn't feeling like eating in.

Reasonably well equipped in the kitchen, shower ok but not very powerful. Beds very comfortable. TV did not always work which was a bit frustrating and it was small. This was a shame as we like to watch TV in the morning before going out and when back in the evening. The garden was great - big and secure for our dogs.

Kitchen twin room for 3 adults . There seem to be a problem with flys as if something was dead in there somewhere. Also smoke alarm was in need of a battery. We had look for the freezer in out building. Yew tree was very nice.

Country lanes great for dog walking. Friendly nearby local pub. This is a useful base for exploring Herefordshire, but you could alternatively spend your holiday locally, reading and walking. We’d recommend Point Cottage.

“This is a cosy cottage, ideal for couples or a small family.”

It is great for dog owners as there is direct access to a quiet bridleway right outside. It is a good base for touring Herefordshire, the Welsh borders, Wye Valley and Malvern Hills. It is a bit remote, being in a village with nothing but houses and one pub, but the pub is only a 5 minute walk away and is friendly, serving good pub grub and local beers and ciders.

“Lovely location, kitchen too small for two couples but would be OK for family with young children, only one w.”

C. is a minus. Having only 13.5 tog duvets meant we were either too hot with duvet or too cold with no duvet. No kitchen scales available in the house. We had originally booked this for the Hay festival week but then Covid happened so we were told that we could not go but that we could rebook another date without charge (very generous, I don't think) We were asked to pick another available date from the online calender as getting our money back wasn't an option, there was availability for 11th September and as it was advertised as £150 cheaper than the peak priced week that had been cancelled we booked it but we're not given a £150 refund. I'll bet that if we had booked a more expensive week we would have been charged the extra. We won't be booking with Sykes again, a dreadful experience. Cottage OK, Sykes abysmal.

“It was a nice location good walks for the dogs and the cottage was stocked with equipments etc BUT we found the sofa had disengaged itself we did manage to slide it back together but it was still uncomfortable.”

We found the stair case difficult two of us had knee problems and one had sight problems so with the bathroom being down stairs it was difficult on the bends of the stairs near the top you could not put your full foot down and I am only size 6 .so it made life very difficult at night. Please note I thought there was a bedroom down stairs but if it was supposed to be the sofa then we would have had another problem. So unfortunately this was not suitable to us and we would not go again. The surroundings of the cottage was fantastic and we enjoyed our visits to the local pub

“The cottage was clean and well equipped, and the garden was really well enclosed for the dogs, with a good walk for them along the bridleway alongside.”

However, the sofa in the living room was extremely dirty, and needed a good clean. It was also in need of re-upholstering and extremely difficult to get up from, after a long period of sitting. We are not in the prime of our youth, but don't normally have this trouble anywhere else. As it was a very warm week, necessitating doors and windows to be left open, flies were a really big problem, and we left a note in the book for the owners, recommending a fly spray that we ourselves use, which is sprayed onto window frames and ledges, which kills flies almost instantly. The stairs are also very hard to cope with, with an extremely narrow angled turn at the top. Definitely not recommended for the elderly or for young children!

“The cottage was plagued with flies which previous guests had experienced.”

There was a tin of fly spray but the owners need to take further measures. There were two mugs in the cupboard that were filthy. The two white chopping boards were disgusting and the china was a miss match. There were no baking trays or casserole dishes in which to cook. The bathroom and bedroom were clean. However I felt for a two night stay it was far from a pleasant experience. The owners need to up their game and look at the basics for the cottage. There was tea and coffee but no milk to welcome us. On a positive note the situation is beautiful and ideal for pet owners.

“The cottage was charming, it was in a rural setting by the side of a quiet road.”

The owners were helpful and welcoming. The village itself was quiet and pretty. When we booked, the cottage was marketed for six people.There were five of us in the cottage, all adults. The cottage was a little in the small side for five but we didn't mind that as we used it as a base for the Hay Festival and for visiting Herefordshire. It was cosy and sufficiently equipped for our needs.

“A really pretty, homely cottage.”

When we arrived the heating had been put on for us.....so was already toasty warm. In fact we didn’t need the wood burner, although it had been made up in readiness, and was ready to go! There was milk in the fridge, coffee, tea, sugar etc. Plenty of pots and pans. Fresh linen. Couldn’t fault anything! Thank you!

“Point cottage is a quaint property in a good location in Preston on Wye, Herefordshire.”

There is a dog friendly pub within a few minutes walk and there is a Post Office and shop within 4 miles. The area is lovely and there is lots to do within a 20 mile radius.There is a bridleway on the doorstep which is ideal for an early morning dog walk. The Point is well appointed and has a kitchen with enough equipment to make substantial meals. The large bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage for clothes. We were only two adults and a large dog so the cottage was plenty big enough for us - six would be a squeeze, but possible if not a bit cosy! The furnishings are tastful, the cottage is very clean, oodles of hot water and the garden is large enough for dogs/children to run around. The owners kindly left us some milk for our 1st cuppa and there was kitchen rolls, washing up liquid, cling film, foil and toilet rolls supplied, so I needn’t have taken our own! The only negatives of the cottage is the steep stairs (the toilet and bathroom are down stairs - going to the loo in the night took concentration!) and hard stone floors which is all part and parcel of a very old property. I shall pack my slippers for next time!

“The cottage is in a wonderful location, it's quiet and very peaceful.”

The carefully enclosed garden was great for our dogs, giving them ample space to play. The cottage itself however, did not live up to the description given on Sykes website. It is marketed as being able to accommodate six, but cramming six people into that cottage would be impossible. According to the description, the sofa can be converted into a bed sufficiently large for two people to sleep on, that along with the two upstairs bedrooms qualifies it to sleep six. The ancient, grubby sofa was extremely uncomfortable to sit on and could never provide a satisfactory bed for two. Even more evidence came in the form of the dining suite. - are meals to be taken in relays so that six people can use the four chairs? The dissatisfaction we felt in regard to Point Cottage was due to the unrealistic description presented on the website. Please could you ensure that descriptions accurately reflect the facts of the accommodation. In this case the cottage sleeps four and the standard of the furnishings and facilities definitely do not merit the four tick rating it has. It does not approach luxury as is suggested, but provides adequate accommodation.

“Enjoyed our stay at Point Cottage.”

Very quaint old cottage but nicely looked after with what appeared to be a relatively new (but small) kitchen. Stairs are quite steep and narrow, and bathroom is downstairs so a little tricky in the middle of the night! Garden an absolute joy, our 2 dogs enjoyed their time running about and we were happy knowing it was secure. Would recommend staying here for peace and quiet.

“It's a stunning ancient cottage with brilliant fixtures and unexpected extras and refurbished wonderfully.”

Great garden for the kids to play in, wonderful footpaths around the corner. We really loved it and would return. The only thing we weren't sure about is whether we should be drinking the water that's gone through a water softener, but we got bottled water for that.

“Very disappointed with this cottage.”

We arrived on a bright sunny afternoon and were met at the back door with a very unpleasant smell of diesel oil which we traced to the cabinet beside the door and the smell entered the cottage as we left the door open to allow some light into the narrow kitchen. We found the interior of the cottage to be very dark unlike the photos on the website and needed the lights to be on. The L shaped sofa bed in the sitting area looked very grubby and was uncomfortable to sit on as it is so worn and soft. The room also has a very small television. The photo on the website is inaccurate and there is now a log burner in the empty chimney space. The wooden stairs to the bedrooms are steep with an acute turn at the top where the treads become vary narrow at one side and although a hand rail is provided, extreme care needs to be taken when descending. Reference to this should be included in the cottage description or a photo included as these may not suit everyone. The ground floor bathroom is very basic but looks ok. There should also be photos of the two bedrooms online, the larger of which is very dark and uninviting. The twin room that we required was not prepared for us. The room is very small with two beds which were unmade with no bed linen available.The sagging mattresses on both beds are poor quality and well past their best and were covered with worn out mattress protectors with a folded duvet on each. There is no evidence of the "quality furnishings" referred to in the description on the online listing. We phoned Sykes to advise them that we had made the decision not stay in this cottage and the agent tried to contact the owner on our behalf both by phone and email but subsequently told us that she had been unable to do so until after the weekend. The response from the cottage owner that Sykes eventually passed on to us was very dismissive of our complaint and which we are dissatisfied with. The cottage has undoubtedly been renovated from a smaller building and is in a lovely part of Herefordshire. The addition of a small field at the back is ideal for dog owners and children but the actual accommodation, in our opinion, is certainly not 4 star standard and our experience left us very disappointed.

The property stands alone along a country lane but is only 1/4 mile from Preston on Wye village. The bridle path alongside the cottage is excellent for dog walking as the only vehicles you might come across is the odd tractor in the surrounding fields. The cottage has a large garden, mainly grass, and is ideal for children and dogs. The large shed is really useful and ideal for wet coats and muddy boots after a day's walking.

PRESTON-ON-WYE

Hereford 10 miles; Hay-on-Wye 12.5 miles.

The rural village of Preston-on-Wye is situated close to the River Wye on the edge of the beautiful Golden Valley, which is flanked by the Black Mountains to the west and gentle hills to the east. This quiet village has a village pub and is ideally located between Hereford and Hay-on-Wye, surrounded by lovely countryside including the Offa's Dyke Pathway and Wye Valley walks. Less than 10 miles away is the ancient city of Hereford which dates back to the 7th century, boasting a magnificent cathedral which displays the world famous Mappa Mundi and the renowned 'chained library', and a medieval bridge over the winding River Wye. Just 12.5 miles away is the wonderful market town of Hay-on-Wye, famous for its 30-plus bookshops, excellent pubs, restaurants and antique shops, making it one of the most visited tourist attractions in Wales.
