“Nichols was a great host!”

Responded very quickly, and was very accommodating to our needs. Check-in instructions were super detailed and helpful.

“Painswick village is a lovely cotswolds village and had lots of local walks from it, which was what we wanted The pub was great for food and drinks and the locals all very friendly.”

It was disappointing that there wasn’t a local coffee shop and the only shop was a generic grocery store. For artisan bakers etc we had to travel in to Stroud. The cottage itself was lovely. It was very clean and everything you needed was there. Lovely to have a wood burner, with all the wood for it available. There is a lovely courtyard garden at the back, unfortunately it was too cold in November to get full use of it! The only disappointing fact about the cottage was it’s actual position. The view from the little round window was fantastic but it was overlooked from the front by a housing estate, which wasn’t apparent in the cottage information when we booked. As a base for exploring the local area it worked really well.

It was delightful, modern, clean and fresh with everything we needed and the welcome pack (and the welcome by the owners) was much appreciated. Parking was excellent and it was a short walk to the centre of the pretty village and the local pub. We would be very happy to return.

The property

Resting just a stone's throw away from local amenities in the picture-perfect town of Painswick, Gloucestershire is The Glebe.

As you arrive, park your car by the fence on the left and make your way into your home away from home; step into the living/dining room and enjoy a moment of peace on the sofa before lighting the woodburning stove and flicking on the Smart TV to watch a film for the evening.

The chef of the group will be pleased to discover a well-equipped kitchen home to an electric oven and induction hob, perfect for rustling up a tasty meal to enjoy at the dining table while you catch up on the day's activities.

Outside, dining furniture offers an alternative arrangement for the summer months; be sure to take advantage of the outdoor space, ideal for both your morning coffee and your evening glass of wine.

Back inside, the ground floor is complete with a sleek shower room, while the first floor hosts another bathroom with a gorgeous deep bath and a walk-in shower, giving you the option to indulge in a long soak or a quick rinse off after an action-packed day.

When it is time to rest, make your way into one of two well-presented bedrooms including a king-size and a double, each with hanging space to store your belongings.

If you can tear yourself away from this charming dwelling, head to the nearby Painswick Rococo Garden, an 18th century flower and vegetable garden just a scenic walk from the doorstep of the cottage.

The Glebe is just a hundred metres off the Cotswold Way National Trail, and there are plenty of footpaths and walks around and across the valley, including circular walks to include charming villages such as Pitchcombe, Slad, Cranham and Sheepscombe – and many village pubs on the way. Further afield, enjoy a trip to Rodborough and Minchinhampton Commons which is home to some of the country’s best wildlife and is a site of Special Scientific Interest.

Plus it has great views across Stroud and the valleys and is the location of Rodborough Fort, and inhabited folly.

Further afield are many interesting places to visit, such as Woodchester Park and the National Arboretum at Westonbirt.

A short car journey will take you to Stroud, voted the “Best Place to Live in the UK 2021” in the Sunday Times.

Best visited on a Saturday when the award winning farmers market is held on many of the streets.

There are also many wonderful places to eat at food stalls in the Five Valleys Centre, which also has a local butcher, fishmonger, bakery, greengrocer, wine shop and delicatessen.

Beyond Stroud is Nailsworth, a market town full of independent shops – well worth a visit.

Slightly further afield is Tetbury, a charming Cotswold town with boutique shops and royal connections.

A short car journey will take you to the thriving city of Gloucester, which boasts the grand Gloucester Cathedral and the fascinating Museum of Gloucester, each adding to the character and charm of the city.

Gloucester also offers a quay with a good selection of shops and restaurants; why not work up an appetite with a shopping spree before treating your loved ones to a meal out in one of the many eateries.

From the cottage, there are many smaller towns and villages to explore, providing walkers, cyclists and explorers a wealth of routes to discover and topped off with the unbeatable appeal of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Painswick, located only 10 miles from Cheltenham, is a town and civil parish in Gloucestershire. The town originated from the wool trade, but is now best known for its parish church’s yew trees and the local Rococo Garden. The village is mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold Stone. It stands on a hill in the Stroud district which overlooks one of the Five Valleys and is halfway along the Cotswolds Way National Trail. It is home to a cricket and rugby team and has a popular golf course on the outskirts of the town. There is a local pub The Royal Oak which offer real ales, real fires and a courtyard. Opposite the pub is a well-stocked village shop. A twenty minute walk from the village is the Painswick Beacon which affords vast views across Gloucester to the River Severn and the Malvern Hills. The Painswick Centre hosts many events and exhibitions and is home to the ACP Gallery. Painswick is 4 miles north of Stroud and 2 miles northwest of Slad – home of Laurie Lee, author of “Cider with Rosie”.
