Killingworth Castle

Woodstock is a small and picturesque village, full of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques. It also contains a large number of good quality restaurants. So whether you prefer a fine dining experience, great British pub grub or an Indian, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Woodstock. Here are our recommendations:

The Killingworth Castle

Glympton Road, Wootton, Woodstock, Oxfordshirehttp://www.thekillingworthcastle.com

Possibly the most traditional of the choices we’ve listed below. Located in a little village just outside Woodstock, this traditional 17th century coaching inn is a firm favourite with the locals and visitors alike. The pub serves the best of British food, using local, seasonal produce, and they even make their own beer on the premises. Despite the ‘castle’ moniker, the pub features a cosy bar, complete with a roaring fire in the colder months. There is a daily specials board that has included Cornish crab, crispy salt cod and marinated courgette with fennel mayonnaise. It serves a great pint too.

The Restaurant at The Macdonald Bear Hotel

Park Street, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, OX20 1SZhttp://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/macdonald-bear-hotel/eat-drink/the-restaurant/

Fans of modern fine dining should head over to this hotel, as it features renowned chef Matt Weedon's inspirational modern cooking. Formerly a 13th century coaching inn, this award-winning restaurant has a stylish dining room with a great atmosphere. The restaurant menu includes ravioli of native lobster with pear, lobster and vanilla bisque, or roasted cod, braised chicken wings, tomato fondue and chicken jus. For a more informal experience you can try the bar or lounge, complete with views across the market square.

The Feathers Hotel

Market Street, Woodstock, Oxfordshire OX20 1SXhttp://www.feathers.co.uk

Gin lovers should make time to visit the Feathers, as it holds the official Guinness World Records for the most varieties of gin commercially available. As regards food, you can sample the best of English modern cuisine at the award-winning restaurant. Again, we have dedicated chefs who use local and seasonal ingredients, sourced daily, to provide refreshing and light menus in the summer, and warming and robust meals in the winter. You can also visit the Bar for lunch, evening meals, or just a coffee or cream tea.

Jaan

36 Oxford Street, Woodstock, Oxfordshire OX20 1TTJaan, Woodstock – Tripadvisor

This Indian restaurant is hugely popular with locals in Woodstock, with great reviews concerning the service and of course, the food. The staff are truly welcoming and love to chat about sport – ask about Manchester United and you’ll get big smiles in return! The food is absolutely everything you would expect in a good Indian restaurant, fresh and varied with some excellent House Specials. Jaan’s is not the cheapest dining experience, but the quality of food and the friendly atmosphere provided by staff, are definitely worth paying that little bit extra for. Expect a meal for two to cost around £40.00 to £50.00.

La Galleria

2 Market Place Woodstock Oxon OX20 1TAhttp://www.lagalleriawoodstock.com

You’ll find this Italian restaurant next to the town hall in Woodstock, where you’ll get a warm welcome from the owner Lucio and his team. Serving a selection of delicious Italian fare, you can choose whether to relax for a three course dinner, a simple lunch or supper, or enjoy a coffee on the patio. The restaurant features a light and airy atmosphere, complete with crisp table linen and daily fresh flowers. There’s also a cellar room that you can hire for private dining.

The King’s Head

Oxford Road, OX20 1TT

Opposite Jaans Restaurant is a very popular pub-come-restaurant (not a gastro pub really!) which is possibly the most popular venue in Woodstock. There is a wide choice of beers and wines in the bar and the food is always a good/high standard, not pretentious but simple and enjoyable. Perhaps the best thing about this choice is the fact that it is almost always busy and buzzing – a true sign of a place being popular because of what it offers.
