No sooner did we turn our back on Christmas than there’s the fabulously optimistic sign of spring just around the corner. Yes – Christmas was lovely – and our Festive Friday’s a great success, but who isn’t excited by the thought of lengthening days and the first shoots of spring appearing?

A carpet of snowdrops is already starting to appear – and, thanks to a massive spring flowering bulb project over the past 10 years, there’ll be many more to come including aconites daffodils, hellebores and other spring beauties!

It’s true to say the arboretum provides an assault on many different senses in January and February. You often smell our beautiful witchhazels, sarcococca’s and Daphne’s before you see their splashes of colour, offering up their distinctly individual sweet scents.

On a frosty morning the birdsong is already deafening too- our resident bird population are starting to mark out their territories, already competing for one of the 40 or so nest boxes in the arboretum.

We, meanwhile, have a pretty good reason to sing about ourselves having won silver in the Cotswold Tourism Awards Large Visitor of the Year category. It’s a testament to how great a place Batsford is to visit, and to our wonderful staff who are so keen to share their love of Batsford with visitors.

So the new season’s seeds are now in the Garden Shop along with a lovely range of seed potatoes and onions which means there’s no reason not to have a go at growing your own this year. Why not come along to our Grow Your Own Soup Week and Masterclass where you get a free packet of seed with each bowl of soup to inspire you to have a go at growing your own soup this year! (Monday 3rd – Friday 7th February 12 – 2pm.) Our Masterclass on Saturday 8th between 5 and 7pm offers top tips from our Head Chef about creating gorgeous soups and focaccias and advice about growing your own veg too!

Or you may choose instead to simply enjoy the beautiful view from the deck of the Garden Terrace Café while treating yourself to one of our scrumptious cakes or an afternoon tea! We’re open every day of the year and with so much to see and do, we hope you make 2014 the year you pay beautiful Batsford a visit.
