Burford lends itself naturally to entrepreneurs, start-up businesses and independent traders, with opportunities presenting themselves in the High Street, town centre or further afield. Many businesses in Burford are family run, and have been established for several generations, and some even have the personal endorsement of Prime Minister David Cameron. Here’s who we think really deserve a mention:
All the locals know and love the Burford Garden Centre as a place to find some of the country’s most rare and unusual plants and products. We’ve often found ourselves popping up to the “BGC” whether it is to get some veggie strips, seeds or when we’re looking for home inspiration – it is now such a huge operation (but friendly of course!) there is so much to choose from. The centre has been established for over forty years by the same family, and whether you want to come and browse their huge range of stock, including handmade items from designers, or simply relax in the quiet café, you’re sure to get a warm welcome. And with David Cameron stating that he loves the fact that “there is always something new going on. You can always expect the unexpected”, this is one place that you’ll find yourself returning to time and time again. We love it and are quite certain you will.
Independently owned Cotswold Gateway Hotel is the ideal place to stay of you’re considering a hotel instead of a self catering Cotswolds cottage. This is a charming hotel, with a restaurant and bar serving classic and traditional food – in fact you could have a lovely meal there if you’re staying locally. The location of the hotel is perfectly placed for you to explore the wonderful surrounding Cotswolds villages, whilst providing you with excellent accommodation for both business and pleasure.
Imagine those gift shops where you walk in and immediately start seeing beautiful objects and gifts that you want to buy? Well, Country House Gifts is one of those stores. As soon as you enter you are bombarded with wonderfully quirky items that are typical of what you would find in any Cotswold’s gift store. This is one amazing emporium stocking everything you need for gifts, alongside items for the home and special occasions.
Situated under the famous Tolsey in Burford you’ll find a flower shop with a difference. Keith Davies & Son Flowers only sell on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but their huge range of stock, including gorgeous flowers, plants and houseplants, makes them a firm favourite with the locals. They grow their plants around the corner in Burford and are very ‘bespoke’ in their approach to growing – focussing on what they like and what they know grows locally. They’re also superb value.
You wouldn’t find any Cotswolds town without at least one art gallery, and here in Burford we are spoilt for choice. We love the Brian Sinfield Gallery, which showcases art depicted by 20th century artists, including traditional, contemporary and semi-abstract work. This gallery is independently run and is renowned as one of the leading art galleries to be situated outside London.
If it’s a range of country living clothes you are after, you should check out Elm at Burford. This retailer stocks everything you need for a country style way of life, from hats, footwear, country clothing and more. They also stock well known brands, synonymous with hard wearing materials, such as Schoffel, Barbour, Ariat, Canterbury Leather and more. With 20 years experience in this department, you’re sure to find the expert help available a real benefit.
So while this isn’t the complete list of shops in Burford, it is certainly a good starter for 10 and whether you’re staying locally in Burford or simply passing through you’ll find it is certainly worth a stop-over. Mix it with a cup of tea and cake at one of the cafés and you’ve made a morning or afternoon’s entertainment! Happy Days!
